Delaware members?
Mom and Dad have Delaware on their hit list of possible places to retire (in about 3-4 years). Anybody have any info for us? We know there's no sales tax there -- that's cool -- but still need lots more info.
(Mom has questions about those 55+ Age Restricted Communities with land leases -- sounds kind of scary to me!)
So we would appreciate any and all info you'd care to share with us.
Your pal, Dr. ROo

Re: Delaware members?
We don't live in Delaware, but there's a magazine "where to Retire." They have a website and list some books with a lot of information like cost of living, housing, medical care, etc. I used to subscribe to the Magazine, found it very interesting and full of good information to help compare.

Roo, My mistress has a cousin who lives in Harrington, Delaware, in the bottom third of the state. If your Mom is interested in speaking with him or his wife, let me know. :) Toto^^

Re: Delaware members?
Delaware is a very pretty but mostly rural state. The Wilmington area is congested and basically a larger suburb of Philly. I'd avoid that unless they are city people. Dover has the Air Force Base. If they like the ocean, however, the lower part of the state would be really nice for them. There are some great communities down around the Indian River Bay. It's close to Ocean City Maryland and the Delaware Bay is right there too. You can take a big car ferry from Lewes Delaware to Cape May NJ, and the Eastern Shore of Maryland's Cheseapeake is nearby with lots of sightseeing and neat small towns with history. We vacation down there all the time. We would retire there someday perhaps. But again, we love to salt water fish and boat, and we love the beach.
Hope this helps... Lisa

Re: Delaware members?
Mom says rural would be nice, since we've lived rural for the past 18 years!

Re: Delaware members?
I recommend you go down next fall and check it out... summer gets a little crazy with all the beach traffic. Let me know if you have a specific area in mind. We know our way around the lower part of Delaware pretty well...

Re: Delaware members?
We just spent the weekend there at an agility trial. Beautiful parks, and the people are nice. Its rather commercial outside the park areas though, I thought. If you could get a home near a park, or with land it would be nice.
Lots of restaurants!
I think the winters are mild and the summers hot and humid. Tulip trees and dogwoods abound, so you know its not real cold there ever.

Re: Delaware members?
I have lived in Delaware for 64 years and I think it is nice. The weather is moderate no earth quakes, wild fires or tornadoes. New Castle County, which is the top county is very congested. Kent County is rural for the most part. Sussex County, the lowest county, is both rural and beach. The further you get away from the beach it is all farm land. Rehoboth is the beach area and should be avoided during the summer because of the traffic.

Re: Delaware members?
Thanks, Jim! I appreciate the info! Where are you in Delaware?
It's odd to think of a state that has only three counties! Wow! I think we might tend to go towards the middle or bottom of the state if we should decide on Delaware -- at least we have some time to do research and mull it over.
I'm still leery about the land leases, though -- are they that common in Delaware? (I was looking at 55+ communities).

Re: Delaware members?
I live in New Castle County, the top, but work in Kent County, the middle. There are some properties that are land lease, like Bay View, which is on the Delaware River across from Three Mile Island nuclear plant, but most of the developments you buy the land and have a house built. There are also several mobile home parks in Sussex County that you lease the land. There are several towns that are small and quite like Millsboro, Milford, Milton, Dagsboro, Clayton, Camden, Wyoming, Felton, Little Creek, Lipsick, Bowers, Smyrna. Dover Air Force base really does not have much effect on Kent County. I would stay away from New Castle County we are full no more room, and Rehoboth. Rehoboth is the beach area and in the summer it is bumper to bumper. Just south of Dover Air Base it is really rural. You might find some land on Skeeter Neck road, which is in Little Haven. Newark is in New Castle County and is the home of the University of Delaware, go Blue Hens.
