The Alert One!
My girls are standing at the doors looking out the window. What do they see? Of course, a pesky squirrel. The barking begins. As they have been in most of the day while I work; I open the door and tell them to go get that squirrel. They charge as if they are running for their lives while barking and telling that squirrel they are going to get him. The squirrel knows to go right outside the fence and he is safe. Treasure and Olivia are determined to catch him and also to let the world know that they have conquered it with their vibrant barking.
Surprisingly, at the edge of the woods, INSIDE the fence a squirrel is scampering around looking for nuts. Treasure and Olivia are too busy conquering the squirrel outside the fence. But Belle must have eyes in the back of her head, because off she goes to get the squirrel in the yard. She charges and almost catches it. All the while the two little ones are still trying to catch the one out of reach.--LOL

Re: The Alert One!
One day Keeley "treed" a squirrel. She chased it and it ran up the tree but there was no other tree for the squirrel to jump to and Keeley just stayed at the base of the tree barking. She must have been there for about a half an hour, till I finally called her in and gave the squirrel a chance to escape.

Re: The Alert One!
They do love those varmints, don't they!!!! We have a tree in the back yard which connects to one in our neighbors - so Kirby trees them and then they make their way to the neighbors yard. Good exercise. Those squirrels are so darn smart and bold too! Keep hunting, girls.

I have to keep my eyes open all the time - they go after EVERYTHING!
I am glad the squirrels got to escape that terrier persistance!

Re: The Alert One!
I am not sure what I would do if one of them actually caught a squirrel or a mole. Belle has gotten a couple of birds, so I moved the feeder out of the fence. My girls are DETERMINED to get one someday. I finally had to tell them enough for one day. Terriers are soooo funny.

Kelsey caught a mole in my Dad's backyard one summer. I was watching her fom the bathroom window and she was playing with it, tossing it up in the air.

Re: The Alert One!
Oh my goodness! I would be beside myself. My girls would be shocked when I came out of the house screaming to drop it. I can just imagine the look on their face. They would be thinking--What's wrong Mommy, we thought we did good. I would bribe them to come in for a cookie. It would be quite a sight.

Re: The Alert One!
she coaught 2 or 3 that summer and never tried to do anything with them. I did take my Dad's shovel and pick it up and toss it into the woods.
Kelsey was so proud of herself. Now when I had the mouse in my house lsst fall, guess who was the only one to see it? Me! It liked dog food and would come out and eat their food. I put peanutbutter in the trap and some dogfood on top and caught it during the night. My three were sleeping on the couch, very soundly, when I saw it. They didn't wvwn get up when I went to look for it.

LOL! Gracie has done all of the above including mice. She did bring me a frozen dead mouse one time and a woodpecker she found in the woods. They are a hoot. She loves chasing the squirrels and chipmunks.

Re: The Alert One!
When Buster and Robin see a squirrel, they run out the back door and down to steps, at the same time, they go after the squirrel who be now is in the tree, but they don't give up, if they could only climb the tree the squirrel would be a goner. they do this about four or five times a day and never seem to get tired.

Re: The Alert One!
Sounds like Belle likes to hunt alone and keep the bounty for herself. ;0)
R gang never bother birds, thank goodness. we've had an abundance of grosbeaks and goldfinches and hummingbirds this year. when I say 'pretty birdies?' they look up. the squirrels R a different story. the orchard is the squirrel playground and the chase begins. just a game with lots of barking and I let them have that fun. Terriers must chase something!!
Rainey is the one who loves a good mole dig. a true earth dog.

Re: The Alert One!
My Sophie used to love to sit with me in the swing and watch the birds. I would say let's go watch the birds, and out she would go to the swing to sit with me. Thanks for helping me remember this.
Terriers much chase something, and what fun it is for them and for us to watch.

Re: The Alert One!
HA! What a cute story!! I can't imagine how Chester Jo would react if he ever could catch a squirrel. Living in a mid rise condo, he never gets the opportunity...but when we move next year, he'll have a big back yard on a lake....I think he'll be pleased as punch!!

Re: The Alert One!
I have enjoyed hearing the stories of all of the little pups going after the little squirrels, moles, mice, and birds. Terriers do love to chase all of the little animals. I really like to see my girls do it, because I know just how much they enjoy it. They wake up in the morning just for this pleasure. It is so funny watching them.
