A Crazy, Unexpected Turn Of Events
For several weeks I've been frantically looking for a Poodle to adopt and having no luck at all. I'm so desperate for another little Poodle girl to fill the hole in my heart and life left by little Joy. This afternoon I made a trip out to our shelter in case they had one that hasn't been posted on Petfinder yet. No Poodle but they do have an adorable little Chihuahua which is my second breed choice. His name is Paco and it was love at first sight for both of us. I do not want to deal with the problems that sometimes come with having two males but I'm just drawn to this little guy. He was picked up as a stray and no one ever called to see if he was there. I just don't understand how your precious baby can disappear and you make no effort to locate him! Like the shelter director says, he's probably lucky to be out of a home like that. I had him at home for a while this afternoon, mostly to see how he and Chester would get along. I think it may work out okay. I've looked at several Chihuahuas during the past year and as weird as this sounds, this shelter dog is the only one I've found that has everything I want in a Chihuahua; the color and the markings on his chest, the blaze, the white socks, even the white on the very tip of his tail! My sister says all those are signs that I'm suppose to have him. As an extra bonus, Paco has the cutest freckels on his little muzzle! He's very skinny and will look a lot better with a little flesh covering his bones. When I got ready to take him back to the shelter he didn't want to ride in his carrier so I held him and he snuggled against me and he seemed so happy to be there. When I put him back in his kennel at the shelter he started kind of crying. I was close to adopting him right then and there. Poor baby! Several people are "very interested" in adopting him but no one has asked them to put a "hold" on him. I did and they're going to hold him for me until Monday. They close at 4 and I work until 4:30 so I don't know what good that's going to do. Hopefully someone will be willing to stay later. The shelter is filled to overflowing and I'm sure they could put Paco's kennel to good use so I'm going to ask if they would want me to foster him, with the option of adopting him if it works out with Chester. That way I don't have to put out any $$$$ right now and it would probably be helping the shelter out too. Since this will be my last dog, adopting him will forever close the door to my ever getting another Poodle or another Westie and that saddens me deeply. But with our groomer being 50 plus miles away and with her rate increase and being booked up months in advance, having a "wash and wear" type dog would sure make my life easier and it would save me a lot of $$$$. I'm glad I have all weekend to think about it. Wish us luck. I think all three of us are going to need it!

PS
All the time Paco was here this afternoon, his tail NEVER stopped wagging! My sister says that's a very good sign. :-)

They don't show up real well but here's a close up of Paco's freckles. Aren't they cute?

He is a doll Charleen, I do hope he and Chester will get along. Fostering with the intent to adopt is a great way to do this.Keep us posted

I agree about fostering, that will leave it open in case it doesn't work out but he is so cute and with a little more meat, wow, he's a keeper.

Re: A Crazy, Unexpected Turn Of Events
I agree with everybody else--fostering seems like the right choice. It would be awful if you got him and then found out that Chester wouldn't tolerate him! Good luck and keep us up to date on what's happening. Kelsie and Deb

Re: A Crazy, Unexpected Turn Of Events
Chester will tolerate Paco fine. I'm more concerned about Paco tolerating Chester! He did attack Chester this afternoon. Didn't hurt him but it did make Chester go to his crate. My heart just broke for my little guy. I felt so bad. I won't do anything that will make Chester's life less great than it is right now. He is and will always be my top priority.

Charlene - go and get that little guy! He is perfect. Chester will be fine with him. My two boys were introduced and they are perfectly fine with each other.

Re: A Crazy, Unexpected Turn Of Events
I was hoping if I did end up getting another male that they could meet each other somewhere other than on Chester's turff. But I was alone and there was no way I could do it that way.

Re: A Crazy, Unexpected Turn Of Events
Mom had a chihuahua when she was a girl. His name was Buttons and he was colored like MinPin. When mom played the piano he would sit on the bench beside her and "sing". Good luck with Paco, bet he makes a great buddy. Mom had two boy dogs and had no problems with them. Let us know how it works out.

Re: A Crazy, Unexpected Turn Of Events
Life is full of pleasant surprises - - I'm thinking this is one of them. Paws and fingers crossed that it all works out for you - - sounds like you are doing all the right things. He is a little doll with beautiful markings and reminds me of one of my granddogs. Please let us know tomorrow what happens - - we'll be waiting to find out.
