Roo is sick / hurt -- need advice
I got to sleep in a bit today. When i came down Trip told me that we have a "patient." Roo didn't get Trip out of bed this morning, nor did he follow him downstairs like he usually does. Trip came up and brought him down and Roo immediately lay down and wouldn't move. He hasn't eaten breakfast, nor has he been outside to do his business. Right now he's just lying in a chair and looking miserable.
Trip checked his legs and one seems tender. he may have a sprain (he had one several years ago.) He will not stand up -- he doesn't seem to be able to bear any weight and based on before, I'm willing to bet he's in pain. Before I call the vet , does anyone know if there is something I can give him for pain (baby aspirin?) to help give him some relief. I should know this but I can't remember now what is safe and what is not.
We were going to go away on a day trip today but I don't think I can leave him alone like this. Please say your prayers for us and let me know about something for pain -- I can't think straight right now.

Re: Roo is sick / hurt -- need advice
Sorry, I don't know. I've never given mine aspirin. I would call the vet if they are open, or an emergency clinic if you have one there, or you could google it. I'm praying for poor little Roo. Hope he can get in to see the dogter today. He's definitely got something going on. Hopefully it is just a sprain. Hugs, Zoe, Tucker & Mommy

Re: Roo is sick / hurt -- need advice
Cheryl, years ago when my little dachshund Satchie was in pain, the vet said I could give him a 1/4 of an aspirin (adult strength). It helped him a lot! But I agree with Patte, I'd call your vet first and see what they say. Better to be safe!

Re: Roo is sick / hurt -- need advice
I would just call. My Vet is excellent and they will tell you what to do before you bring them in. Sometimes they just have these days and then a few hours later or the next day they are just fine. Poor Roo.

I agree with Ellen I think I would take him to the vet before I gave him anything. Hope Roo gets better soon. Linda

I have to agree. Poor little Roo needs to see the Vet judging from what you're saying. Don't you wish they could talk and tell you what's wrong!

update
He has a vet appointment but not until 4 pm. I may be able to get my DIL (a vet tech) to come over in the meantime. She's sleeping right now because she works night shifts at an emergency clinic and I don't want to wake her just yet. Chris (our son) said he'll call her later and get back to me..
We carried him out to the yard because he'd not gone potty. At first he collapsed, but no whimper from pain. Then he was able to stand and walk very stiffly and do his business (#1 and #2).It seems like possibly his left rear leg -- that's where he's limping. He laid in the sun for a while then wanted to come back in.
He was very interested in eating, however, so he's had half his breakfast (I will give him more later) plus a biscuit and a bit of scrambled egg. I did give him a baby aspirin a while ago and about a half hour later was when he was able to get up and walk.
So our plans are on hold and we'll see how he is during the day. Please keep up prayers for my little guy.

Jugbob used to give his silky a baby aspirin when Nick was feeling under the weather. It always seemed to help. Hope Roo's problem isn't serious.

UPDATE
The diagnosis -- he's being treated for LYME DISEASE. And, yes, it can happen even if you are religious about giving them Frontline Plus. I know.
Poor little guy feels so awful but he was SUCH a good boy at the vet even when they drew the titer. His titer showed negative for everything else (as in heartworm and others I can't remember right now).so that is very good news.
I did have the vet muzzle him on my suggestion but only because I knew he was so stressed but he probably would have been fine without it -- I just wanted to be safe and the muzzle actually seemed to calm him a bit.
In other news, there might also be a slight sprain -- same left front as before. He's also got luxating patella in both rear legs but very minor and the vet does not think it is a factor. Also very slight suggestion of arthritis in the front legs -- but he says that is fairly normal for a 9-year-old guy. Weight is 15.8 pounds and vet says excellent for him. Temp normal, eyes excellent, ears very clean, heart great. He's due for his distemper booster but that won't happen until he's healthy again.
My poor baby.
And eww -- i just found a flea on my arm and it is NOT from Roo -- appears i picked it up at the vet's office because Roo was checked thoroughly and no fleas or flea dirt on him. Damn.,
So anyway, I know this is long and I appreciate your patience .. . he's on doxycycline twice a day for 21 days, with meals, and a very low dosage of carprofen twice a day as needed for inflammation -- the vet says it's for 7 days but he'll probably not need it for more than 3 or 4.
Trip was supposed to go with us, but about a half hour before I was due to leave, he suddenly came down with cramps and diarrhea and stomach pains, so in case anyone is wondering, this has NOT been my very best birthday ever. I'm just going to forget about it and wait a few days and see if I feel like celebrating -- although after today, with both Roo AND Trip sick, I could probably go thru a whole bottle of bubbly all by myself. And not feel at all guilty about it, either.
Poo.
Thanks for your prayers for Roo & please add Trip. Love to you all, Cheryl
P.S. The cat us fine but she's too darned ornery to get sick. I hope.
