ROO UPDATE Vote for this post

The
diagnosis -- he's being treated for LYME DISEASE. And, yes, it can
happen even if you are religious about giving them Frontline Plus. I
know.

Poor little guy feels so awful but he was SUCH a good boy
at the vet even when they drew the titer. His titer showed negative for
everything else (as in heartworm and others I can't remember right
now).so that is very good news.

I did have the vet muzzle him on
my suggestion but only because I knew he was so stressed but he probably
would have been fine without it -- I just wanted to be safe and the
muzzle actually seemed to calm him a bit.

In other news,there
might also be a slight sprain -- same left front as before. He's also
got luxating patella in both rear legs but very minor and the vet does
not think it is a factor. Also very slight suggestion of arthritis in
the front legs -- but he says that is fairly normal for a 9-year-old
guy. Weight is 15.8 pounds and vet says excellent for him. Temp normal,
eyes excellent, ears very clean, heart great. He's due for his distemper
booster but that won't happen until he's healthy again.

My poor baby.

And
eww -- i just found a flea on my arm and it is NOT from Roo -- appears i
picked it up at the vet's office because Roo was checked thoroughly and
no fleas or flea dirt on him. Damn.,

So anyway, I know this is
long and I appreciate your patience .. . he's on doxycycline twice a day
for 21 days, with meals, and a very low dosage of carprofen twice a day
as needed for inflammation -- the vet says it's for 7 days but he'll
probably not need it for more than 3 or 4.

Trip was supposed to
go with us, but about a half hour before I was due to leave, he suddenly
came down with cramps and diarrhea and stomach pains, so in case anyone
is wondering, this has NOT been my very best birthday ever. I'm just
going to forget about it and wait a few days and see if I feel like
celebrating -- although after today, with both Roo AND Trip sick, I
could probably go thru a whole bottle of bubbly all by myself. And not
feel at all guilty about it, either.

Poo.

Thanks for your prayers for Roo & please add Trip. Love to you all,
Cheryl

P.S. The cat us fine but she's too darned ornery to get sick. I hope.

Our Vet won't give the Lyme vaccine and we're in prime tick country here in PA. Next time we go for a visit I'm going to ask what the reason is.

Our Vet says this has been the worst year she's ever seen for Lyme Disease. I hate to mention it, but I hope that Trip hasn't come down with it too. My boss at the paper has been battling it all summer. She didn't even know that she'd been bitten by a tick!
Sorry about your birthday, but hopefully it'll be better next year.

Oh Cheryl - poor Trip and Roo - that picture of Roo says it all.  We don't have lyme disease in NC - but I know a friend of mine in Massachusetts had a pupper that got it -- took time but he is ok now.

I swear sometimes you so look forward to vacation that you end up getting sick from all the running you do before it.

Hugs and westie kisses to Roo from the boys!

Re: ROO UPDATE Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

The vaccine can have side effects, and it's not 100% effective.  The good news is that dogs tend to not get as sick with Lyme disease as people do, and they respond to treatment much better and much more quickly.  I suspect that Roo will be right as rain in a few days, but be sure to finish all the doxy.  Roo may end up testing negative in the future, but it can still recur, so if he ever gets symptoms again, Lyme should be the first thing they test for.

Hope the wine country trip cheers her up. And hugs to Trip. Two sick men in one house?! Come on down, girl! I'll leave the light on for ya!

I hope Roo is much better today.  Usually after just a couple of doses of Doxy you'll see a huge difference.  Of course, the whole prescription needs to be finished.  I had a feeling it would be Lyme or one of the other tick borne illnesses.  We live in NH, and my vet has seen lots of anaplasmosis this year as well as Lyme  I have had very good results with Preventic collars.  They do nothing for fleas, but work better than anything I have tried, might be worth checking out.  I am one of those people with a dog that had a VERY bad reaction to the Lyme vax.  Also, as Katie pointed out it's not 100% effective.  Best of luck recovering, Roo!
