Long time away Vote for this post

Obviously, we have not been here much lately. Lots of stuff going on with Mom's health. Long story short, she started getting sick in September (tummy/digestive issues) and although things seem to be improving, it's been a hard few months since then. She lost almost fifteen pounds since then, but has put a little back on.

This coming Friday Mom is going in to the hospital for a colonoscopy since one test she had indicated the need for that. She is not happy about it but needs to be done, I guess. She also has been on a different diet that seems to help her symptoms. It's called the LOW FODMAP (not FOODMAP!) diet and it has worked wonders so far, but she still has to stay pretty close to home, if you know what I mean. She says she feels like a prisoner as she can't even go out to lunch with friends without worrying. Short excursions to places like grocery or Walmart are ok if planned carefully.

We are also experiencing the severest winter we've had in a long time. Although we didn't get that much snow -- maybe 6-8 inches, it is cold and brutal and we have high winds, cold temps, and a lot of drifting, which makes Mom's cabin fever even worse!

I am doing OK, considering I am 15 and a half years old now. Vision and hearing are pretty much gone, but I still have my Westie spirit.

We were hoping to go south for a few weeks, but that's out, too. So now we are just praying for good results on the colonoscopy on Friday. And we're praying for spring.

We have missed you all!

Your pal,
Roo

Thanks!

Mom says she's not too worried about the prep because that's kinda what her life has been since September, if you can imagine THAT! Not quite as bad, but close!

She had one of those Cologuard tests and that came back positive in December but we are hoping and praying it was a false positive.

Saying our prayers for your procedure. My Dad had a heart valve replacement years ago and did very well with it and I'm sure with today's technology, you'll do great. Still, I know it's scary, so sending some gentle hugs and big prayers your way.

Cheryl, so sorry you are having digestive issues but glad you are getting better.
I believe in colonoscopies. I had my first one 8 years ago and the doctor found
and removed a polyp that the lab said would have become cancerous.
Because of the polyp the doctor said I need a colonoscopy every 5 years
but I had to wait for 8 years and had the colonoscopy last November.
The test said I had a completely clean and healthy colon and the doctor said
I needed another one in 5 years and that if that colonoscopy was clean, too
then he would pronounce me clear of cancer risk and let me go 10 years
between colonoscopies, so I am a great believer in colonoscopies.

Anyway, you and Roo hold on for the rest of the winter, spring is
only a month away. Hugs from David, Sailor and McGinnis

I'm suspecting that's what I have, too. But haven't had any formal diagnosis. How did they determine it for you?

I am hoping that after the colonoscopy, following the diet, and an appointment with a G.I. specialist next month, I may have more encouraging outcome.

My doctor diagnosed it because sometimes no matter what I eat it hits me, also I may have constipation along with it.  I have had it for about 20 years but it has gotten better as I get older.  I think a lot of it had to do with hormones but I still have to be careful if we go out to eat.  I do better if I have a glass of wine before I eat, I think it calms everything down.

Re: Long time away Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

I "go" the other way, if you know what I mean. This all started in September, so I have pretty much been a prisoner in my own house and after a while, that gets pretty confining. I can only go out with careful planning and I hate that because I feel like I am missing out on seeing friends. It seems most of them are like, "Sorry. Call me when you get better." (Sigh. There is no way they can understand the fear and frustration of this whole thing.) I don't mean to sound like a big pity party here, but I think YOU understand how I feel, and that helps.

We have pretty much given up on going out to eat anywhere. It's just too risky. Fortunately, over the past year, Trip has become quite the cook at home and for that I am very grateful. We even put together a cookbook before the holidays about cooking for two at home and gave away copies to our son and wife, one to a cousin, one to my sister-in-law for Christmas and they all loved it.

BTW, I like your idea about a glass of wine. After Saturday, if all goes well, that's in my plan!

UPDATE: Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

Mom says this is the hard part today -- heading into the prep by drinking lots of GatorAde and then in about an hour so or the real prep begins by taking those pills and drinking the "spiked" GatorAde (1/2 gallon in all) until she thinks she will probably float away....not to mention all the fun time in the bathroom that starts about 4 p.m. and goes on to midnight.

And the worst part -- no food at all -- unless you count Jello----that is allowed, but otherwise just liquids. And Mom says she is HUNGRY and doesn't get to eat until sometime tomorrow so she is whining like a spoiled little puppy. I offered her one of my biscuits but she said NO THANKS...NOT ON THE LIST. And she says all she can think about is FOOD, FOOD, FOOD -- and I know ALL about that line of thought!

So tomorrow morning, Mom and Dad leave for hospital at 6:30 a.m. Procedure at 7:30 and then we shall see what we shall see. SO PLEASE SAY PRAYERS it all turns out well because I love my Mom and want her around for a long time -- healthy.

Your pal,
Roo

P.S. Mom is staying busy by being on the internet a lot today. She says she wants to plan a vacation.

Another UPDATE: Mom's home! Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

She's tired but prep was not that bad and the anesthesia was great, according to Mom. She has to wait for a pathology report -- next Wednesday. But she's doing good (paws crossed!) so happy to be out of there and home with me where she belongs.

She's under orders to lay low and rest today. She's got now problem with that since she only got 4 hours of sleep last night.

We thank you for your thoughts and prayers -- they mean so much!

Love,
Your pal,
Roo

Cheryl, I can't imagine how uncomfortable and confining your health situation is.  Sorry I'm coming in late, but I hope you'll have good news for us on Wednesday and that the doctors can get you back on track.

Glad to hear that Roo is doing well despite his failing sight and hearing.   As long as the nose is working though he'll be good to go. I'm sure he was happy to keep you in line with resting after your procedure

hugs, Theo and Willie
