Update on My Roo Vote for this post

Roo had a checkup yesterday. It went pretty well, overall, but his eyes are now forming cataracts. Due to his age and the need for general anesthesia and cost ($6 to $8K for both eyes, we will have to let nature take its course.

As for his collapse last month, the doctor called it syncope, or fainting. I looked up the possible prognosis and it doesn't look too encouraging if it keeps happening,

Do any of you have any experience with this and would you care to share your experience with me? Don't feel you have to sugar coat it. We know his time with us is dwindling.

Thank you.

We wish you had had better news from your vet, but age is taking its toll on us all. We've had 2 Westies who lost their sight due to cataracts and they both did wonderfully! I haven't moved a stick of furniture in years (except to clean!) Even outside, if they have a confined space they learn pretty fast where everything is.
As for the syncope, my Dad has that due to a heart condition. With meds, he's doing great so I'm assuming it would be the same for dogs? Treat the underlying condition and the fainting goes away or doesn't happen very often. We'll be watching for updates on your darling Roo and hoping for good news. Roo is in our prayers!

I am sure it wasn't the news you wanted to hear, but I have known dogs with cataracts and have done very well.  don't; know anything about syncope so can't help you there.  Just enjoy Roo for as long as you can

picture of him is my IOW for sure.

god bless him

Oh Cheryl, getting old is very hard especially when it concerns our 4 legged kids.  My first Scottie boy Spencer had syncope in his old age.  He would go out in the back yard with my Caesar and he would all of a sudden fall over.  I would run out and pick him up,  push on his chest 2 or 3 times and he would come too, and go back to his walk in the yard.  When you have a syncope episode your heart rate drops suddenly and it causes you to pass out.  Usually some adrenalin kicks in and the heart rate picks up again and you regain consciousness .  When I pumped his chest a few times it got his heart rate back up  Some times all I had to do was flip him up quickly and that was enough stimulation to get his little heart back into rhythm.  The only real cure for syncope is a pacemaker which they can put in dogs but is expensive and usually is done in young dogs.  My Spencer started having syncope episodes when he was about 14 years old.  At first it was about once every 5 to 6 weeks, as he got older they got more frequent as often as 2 to 3 times a week.  As an experienced Cardiac Nurse I just flipped him around a bit or pumped his chest a few times and he came back!  My Spencer crossed the bridge at 16 1/2 yrs. of old age.  It was not from a syncope episode.  Hope this helps some.  It definitely can be scary.  Louise, Caesar, Judah and Angel Murphy

Louise, thank you so much for your insight. I was afraid to move him but if/ when it happens again, I will follow your lead.

Did Spencer also poop during episodes?

We wish Roo some good health and hope this fainting thing can be helped.

It so hard to watch them have health issues.

Re: Update Again Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

Cheryl 5 minutes is a long time.  How was he when he came to?  Just wondering if your Vet checked Roo for overactive insulin production.  That is more common in older dogs then syncope.  If a dog's pancreas spits out to much insulin (can be caused by a tumor on pancreas) the dog's blood glucose drops quickly and the dog will pass out.  After the dog's body releases adrenalin and Glucose the blood sugar goes up and the dog comes to.  That is what my Vet and Spencer's Cardiologist thought was happening to Spencer.  They checked his insulin levels on 3 occasion and they were normal.  I told the Cardiologist that it was syncope because I always checked for a pulse which he did not have when he had an episode.  After the episode was over he always had a strong palpable pulse!  Let me know what the Vet has to say.  Louise

im feeling for you.  my pip (shitzu) he is old with one eye, but almost lost sight in the one eye.   he bumps into things alot, can remember his way around the house, as long as furniture is not moved about.   on the lead we have too watch out, too make sure he doesnt bump into things, not easy, but im going too try pip in a doggy carrier, one that goes over your shoulder so we can carry him about too lower stress for him.   good luck and will look out for updates.
