Your Opinions, Please

I took Sparky and Rio to the vet tonight. Sparky is 20.5lb and Rio 21.6lb. He was very happy with their weight...
Anyway, regarding Sparky's lump, it needs to be removed-but it might be a problem with healing as it's on the hock joint and will keep opening every time she moves her leg. He says it's an unusual place...
Anyway, I requested he clean her big teeth the same time she's under. He was a bit unhappy as he doesn't like to do "clean" surgery the same time as "dirty" surgery as it might cause infection. She will be on antibiotics though.
So I have choices:
A-Have both done and risk infection
B-Have her knocked out twice which I'm unhappy about too.
I've chosen A but I was curious as to what you'd do....
It's costing £200.00 ($290.00) and she's having it done next Friday so I CAN change my mind yet...
Also, Tony is paying for it....I just haven't got it at present so he said he's happy to pay for it. Wasn't that really good of him ?
Sorry so long, folks......plus this seems very trivial in light of Robyn's news...

Re: Your Opinions, Please Reply to this Message

I would go with your choice... why put them through so much and with a good antibotic, she should do just fine. Keep us updated on her progress... I suppose you could keep her confined for the first few weeks to get the mending on its way...?

Re: Your Opinions, Please Reply to this Message

It's going to be a bloody nightmare. Can't walk her or anything plus I'll have to take her out into the garden on a lead.
It's difficult cos' Rio still needs exercise.....

I agree with you. I think the risk of being put under is greater than infection. I am sure they will be very careful. They could do the teeth first.....

Re: Your Opinions, Please Reply to this Message

Yes I would go with your choice too. One anaesthetic has to be better than two and they should be able to manage 2 surgeries without either becoming involved. As to stopping her jumping around - no ideas on that one. Just get plenty of flower remedy in and take half the bottle yourself! Give Sparky a few drops too! Wasn't that good of Tony? What a gem

I vote option A as well - good luck keeping her calm; that would be so difficult.

Cheers to Tony for being such a generous chap!

I would go with the first choice, one surgery ,two procedures, why risk having her go under twice and the extra suffering, poor baby. That was very considerate of Tony, must be one specail guy!Give the babies a hug from us.

We think A too Lynda..At her age it seems to me to be a safer option than two surgeries. That is what I would do at any rate.
Good luck on keeping her quiet, that will be your biggest problem I think.

Get it over in one go. Can I be of any help over the weekend, we are not off sailing again until next Tuesday, and only then if the weather is OK.

Re: Your Opinions, Please Reply to this Message

I would go with two in one surgery.
Do you have a crate that she can be confined to until she is better?
When Annie was spayed, I kept her quiet in her crate for a couple of weeks. Dr's orders.
She would have chased Schoon if not, and risked messing up her tummy stitches!

Good luck. Poor little one.
Nasty things to have done.
Keep us posted.

No Felicity, no crates in this house !!!
After spaying they were both very good...Sparky was on her own then anyway and when I had Rio done I wheeled her around the park in my nan's shopping trolley !!!

Lynda, when Patti was 11, she had a lump removed and 2 teeth extracted at the same time. Everything went very well, as I am sure it will with Sparky. Of course, I was a nervous wreck. Try not to worry.

He slipped up, at one point and said "take teeth out" and I said NO YOU'RE NOT !! Made sure he didn't write that down !!!
Interesting that you had both ends done too with no after-effects.
Thanks for that, Carrie.

Re: Your Opinions, Please Reply to this Message

Lynda , I go along with the Majority and you on this,
Clean surgery & Dirty Surgery?
I've never heard so much nonsense, ALL surgery should be clean surgery,
Its quite normal to have a number of operative treatments done at the same time, as long as the treatment\s is not so severe as to lead to trauma.
It is normal to have the Major surgery done first, and depending on the condition of the dog during surgery, i.e. Heart-rate\pulse, breathing capacity, length of time under anasthetic, then if no problems small or minor surgerys performed after. The wound in this instance is further away from the teeth cleaning end, and there should be no danger of cross infection provided that CLEANLINESS is observed at all stages. ( beside the wound would be covered and the area cleaned with anti infection cleaner before surgery.)

Re: Your Opinions, Please Reply to this Message

Lynda: I see points to both A and B. No one wants to have their dog go under surgery twice. I work in a hospital and know that surgeons do not like to do combination surgeries if there is a chance of bacteria spreading. They will take every precaution but it could happen and so most human surgeons will not even take that chance and just refuse to do it. Not all bacteria are killed by the same antiboitic so just because they are on an antibiotic for one thing, that does not necessarily mean it will kill another type of bacteria and as the bacteria become resistent, they have had to develop more and more antibiotics to do the job.

If he will have an open wound, you might think twice about doing both together, although if he does the lump first and teeth second, with the first being covered good, I think it would be okay. I think part of the problem here is when they clean teeth, that junk flies all over and sprays everywhere so I can understand his concern.

Both are risky - undergoing anesthesia twice - and cross contamination - so only you can weigh the risks and decide which chance you want to take.

Re: Your Opinions, Please Reply to this Message

Hhhhmmm...I see your point...decisions, decisions. But she'll be 10 the day before and I am very worried at having her knocked out twice...
I suppose if there is infection they can sort it out without her being put under again..

Re: Your Opinions, Please Reply to this Message

Well, working in an operating room for 13 years I do understand what the vet is saying. It is not good technique to combine clean and dirty procedures as it does increase the risk of infection. BUT........it can be done, he needs to do the clean case first, cover it up and than do the teeth. As long as she is on antibiotics she should be fine. make sure she is on them post op as well. Good luck Lynda!!!

I was thinking teeth first, but you should know. I guess their mouths are dirty. I try to think of them as clean especially when I get all those Westie kisses. LOL

Re: Your Opinions, Please Reply to this Message

When I started reading the posts I though (A) but by the time I got to the bottom I thought NO IDEA! What a decision. Poor little Sparky. I had my wisdom teeth out 2 days before my birthday and got a bad headcold anyway so I couldn't eat any cake even if my teeth had been fine, breathing and swallowing were difficult at the time. Good luck little one.Wow $290 is good, cost me $444 for Kelsi to have just her teeth cleaned.

I am inclined to agree with you Lynda, get it over and done with in one.
The one thing I would query however is will Sparky need more anesthetic to do the work.
How kind of Tony to foot the bill.
Good wishes for dear Sparky.

Re: Your Opinions, Please Reply to this Message

What an interesting discussion this has been! I think that the vet has handled this very professionally, he has a duty to warn you of what could go wrong, and you want someone who wants to do things just right. Nevertheless, if I were you I'd get both done at the same time. Glad you won't have the added worry of dealing with the bill and can concentrate on worrying about Sparky! She'll be fine, of course!
Cheers, Maureen

Re: Your Opinions, Please Reply to this Message

Hard decision! If it were Elliot, I'd have them both done at the same time as he became very ill (pancreatitis attack)after he was put out for his neutering. Has Sparky ever been put out before? If so, how did she do?

I must have missed your post before regarding her lump. What kind of lump is it?
Will the Vet let you stay there with her after she wakes up?

Re: Your Opinions, Please Reply to this Message

She was put out before for her spay. That was it.
The lump's on her back leg where our shin is. It's not attached to bone, thankfully, and it doesn't bother her if you move it around.
I won't wait at the vet. They do a lot of ops. in one day but I CAN collect her the same day he said.
It will be interesting to see Rio's reaction as she's never been without Sparky. I'm taking the day off to keep her company though...

Re: Your Opinions, Please Reply to this Message

lynda , i would definitely go with one surgery. there should not be a problem keeping everything sterile and not contaminating one steril field with anything from the other area.
