FYI - flea meds

Just came from the vet, gettng flea medication for the boys-asked about using Advantax. My vet said they don't even carry it,very toxic and even found cases of death in dogs.So they do not recommend it at all ,especially for smaller dogs as terriers and such. Thought I'd pass this info on.

Re: FYI - flea meds Reply to this Message

I very early on ruled it out, because we have cats, and it is very toxic to them. Good information, Thanks!!

We use Frontline plus, hate to use it also, fleas I've heard are not the problem here,it's the ticks, last year when we had Parker took him for a walk,I counted at least ten ticks we took off.I was always checking, still do.

The Minkies have probably had around 5 or 6 in their lives between them !! I hate ticks.

Re: FYI - flea meds Reply to this Message

This echoes my feelings on these products, My Cat nearly died when I used a vet remedy called Tigavon.....now taken off the market.
I am not to this day an advocate of the pop on the neck flea contol products.
However there are times of the year when using a stronger product than over the counter is necessary. At these times I use Frontline Spray .
Misty is more prone to Fleas than Laddie, My vet says its her scent which attracts them.
Good to be forewarned Sylvia Thank You.

try garlic Reply to this Message

I give Kenzie a 2mg odourless garlic tablet in her food everyday which seems to keep the ticks and fleas away. If going somewhere in long grass I will dab some teatree oil on her back, neck etc... Not had fleas at all.

Would the tea tree oil work for the ticks? not worried about the fleas.

Re: try garlic Reply to this Message

Well we have never had a tick and we walk up on common land that is over run with deer, foxs and the rest. I also brush her through every day and we do keep her coat very short so we could spot anything. Think that we just may be lucky.

Re: FYI - flea meds Reply to this Message

Hi all! I think a while back I asked for advice on what to use for flea/tick protection. I found a product which is on the expensive side until you see all the things it protects against. It is called Revolution. It protects against fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, ear mites, heartworm, mange and something else I cannot pronounce. It is safe for cats I believe b/c Murphy got a dose that was for dogs and cats under 5 lbs. It goes by weight, and it was recommened by the breeder and vet. I will try to post a link...
Just wanted to let you know.
Take care everyone!

Re: FYI - flea meds Reply to this Message

We used heartguard for the heart worm prevention and frontline for the flea and tick for years with good results. The vet just switched them to revolution which is applied like frontline, and is good for heartworm, fleas and ticks.

Re: FYI - flea meds Reply to this Message

Can't say I've heard of it, but then that's nothing new. I've heard of Advantage.

Re: FYI - flea meds Reply to this Message

Could you please clarify--- are you speaking about "Advantage" or "Advantax?" My two have used Advantage Plus, without any problems.

thanks. Pam
