Heat Cycle

Bailey is now 7mths old. I started watching out for her first heat cycle when she hit 6mths. I checked her daily & didn't really see anything significant. However, she did a lot of licking..down there..as did her brother Brutus. She also seemed very interested in him. He is fixed. A couple of times I found him trying to mount her. Also there were times when she would be sleeping & cry out in what appeared to be a pain..cramp maybe? So, my question is this. Is it possible for a female to go through her first heat cycle without it being really noticable, or could she not have hit it yet? I'd be interested in finding out if this is possible.
Felicity
PS, They have a very secure back yard, & I didn't see any stray males in the neighbourhood

Re: Heat Cycle Reply to this Message

Katie went through her first heat cycle at 9 months. I am not sure, but probably every dog is different. I was talking to a breeder woman who said that they bleed for 1 week only, and two weeks they are still in the heat cycle. But, Katie bled for 3 weeks straight.
So, not sure if you would not notice her going through a cycle. Maybe check with the vet, he would know for sure.
Good luck

Re: Heat Cycle Reply to this Message

HI Girls, Do you intend to breed these girls of yours?
If you have not intention of doing this, do the babes a big Favor, GET THEM SPAYED,
There are some people that think Oh, I will have them have one litter, and then we will get them spayed.
Think very carefully.
Pregnancy and Giving Birth ,as you Ladies know can be life threatening. If you want to avoid the possibility of losing your loved pet. GET THEM SPAYED.
So many benefits, for the Dog, no pain cramps-no unwanted attention from all those randy dogs- reduces the likelihood of uterine cancer, breast cancer, no moody times, thats for a start.
For you, LONGER LIFE likely to spend with your beloved pet, less worry about medical bills, less mess to clean up,
better quality of life with the dog.
Maisie is spayed, we were more or less forced into it as she had Perthes disease in her hip, and although she is fine now, we decided that we would not pass on this gene to other pups and there wouldnt be any birthing problems with Maisie.
After lots of research, and thinking, we had her spayed. We Have had other dogs that weren't, I tell you as a long time owner of dogs, the benefits are immense. Hope you dont mind my info and advice.
Jack

Re: Heat Cycle Reply to this Message

Katie had an infection as a puppy, and my vet advised us to have her go through one heat cycle before she could be spayed. This was done out of necessity, not because we wanted her to have puppies.
I do agree strongly about spaying and neutering your pups. I know how beneficial it is to have them done.
But, not all people think like us, hopefully more will someday.
Give hugs and kisses to Maisie, sweet little girl

Re: Heat Cycle Reply to this Message

Hi Jack, Yes I do know about the importance of spaying & neutering. All our fur babes are spayed & neutered with the exception of Bailey. Yes we do intend to breed her. Her stud is already picked out, she will not be bred indiscriminately, his stud fee is $900. This will not be until she reaches 15mth old at the earliest. After that she will be spayed.
I appreciate your concern & concur with all your points.

Some times I was never sure...I think it varies from dog to dog. If there was a lot of licking going on, I imagine she's had it.

We used to raise Schnauzers, There never was a heat cycle that went by without the classic symptoms, It's a long drawn out process. I have added a link for your information. Its good to see you are being so responsible. Puppies are wonderful, but the problems that crop up are many. Good luck.

Re: Heat Cycle Reply to this Message

My vet talked to me in depth regarding breeding my girl, Gracie. When it came down to it, I wasn't willing to take the chance of her dying during the delivery. I let her have one heat and had her spayed.
