Flea control

Got a question and would like your opinions and possible help on this.
We Have been using for about 3 months now a product called 'Hartz Control'.
It is a flea and tick control that is put directly on the skin, and I must confess that its only today, that I have looked and read the package, as Eileen generally deals with purchasing, and treating Maisie.
I looked at the instructions, dosage and ingredients, and didnt realise that it contained 'Permethrin'
Now that is the stuff that is put in fly spray I remembered.
Now we dont use this all the time, we have used it twice, and only when Maisie has been in contact with other dogs that may have fleas, in park, or places where they might be like grooming parlours.
Breifly this is what it says on directions,( in very small print) DONT use on CATS, puppies under two weeks old, nursing bitches, if other flea control products have been used recently,or on sick animals, convalescing, or if animal suffers reaction wash with non insecticidal shampoo, if animal is unwell consult a vet! For Humans- Wear protective gloves, Avoid contact with skin, hands , eyes,if feel unwell see a doctor, etc.
Now I just did a search and found the following info below. Needless to say this stuff is going straight in the trash-bin, and we wont be using it again.
Question: what other preparations do members use for their dogs that are safe and still effective against fleas?
We used to use Frontline, but we were told that this Hartz product is the same, but cheaper,so we switched. I am not really happy to use these preparations, but Maisie, has not so far shown any adverse reaction, but how do I know how she feels about it, she cant tell us.
I would appreciate your comments and help,
Jack

I use Advantage on my Girlies..Always have, They have never had a reaction of any kind to it, and it works! Daisy is very allergic to fleas. She never had a problem until my son brought a flea infested Cocker puppy home. Her mouth and face was all swollen and she could hardly breath. She had to have a Cortisone shot or risk choking because her throat was swelling too. Then pills for two weeks. Advantage keeps her flea free. Check some of the pet catalogs, I get Advantage cheaper than at the vets through one.

We use Frontline. It works for us. The dogs are comfortable and well. When we go to paralysis tick areas we use it fortnightly, which worried me until I let it go to 3 weeks once and Hamish got a tick and got dangerously ill. That was a couple of years ago and I have not questioned the wisdom of using it every summer since

I use nothing. By keeping their coats really short I can spot a flea at 50 paces plus if they've had one I will fleacomb for a couple of weeks each day. They love it.

Jack, I'd steer clear of that product. There was an expose on our local news about Hartz-Mountain flea control for cats that caused seizures and ultimate death for some cats. It was very heartbreaking to see. I would not trust their products on my dogs. I agree with the other posts that by looking on the internet, you can find Frontline or Advantage at a cheaper price.

I used frontline only once so far....but you know the problem I've encountered for the first time, because I have two pups. When I but it on ,right away they started to check each other out and I didn't want them to lick the other, talk about worrying to death.I actually put a sweater so they wouldn't lick, scared me,now I'm not sure about using it next month.Always had one dog, so you didn't worry ,how do you guys with all these pups do it,or are mine just too d....nosey!

My pups love to lick, but don't lick where we put the Frontline, thank goodness!!! I always worry about products we put in their ears because of the licking problem.

We use Frontline.
No problems so far.
We apply it at night, just before bedtime, and whisk them off to their separate crates.
This gives it time to dry and then there is no worry about them licking it off each other.

I use Frontline too and haven't had a problem or a flea. How often do you apply it?

Re: Flea control Reply to this Message

I give Kenzie garlic capsules (2mg) in her food and keep her short so I can spot fleas if there. Have never found one and we have a cat.If we are walking her up on the common we dab a bit of teatree oil on her - seems to work. i was always put off all the flea preventatives when they said we had to wear gloves to apply them.

Lynda - you crack me up!

Listen - I've heard Frontline and Advantage are good - but I've also heard garlic tabs works great too!

I don't use anything (yet) and seldom do unless we are traveling. I believe - if you don't have a problem - don't mess with it (yet). I bath with a gentle flea shampoo here and there as well. :)
