May 19 at 09:35 Re: Grooming We hope your groomer is willing to work with her. The first time we took Daisy at five months of age she about cleaned up on the groomer. Then I found the groomer that I had used for years was still in business, just in a different towm. I took Daisy there. We got a few pretty funny looking cuts, but now she can do anything with her she wants. You can help by brushing her a lot at home especially her face and feet. Put her on a table when you do it..I use my dryer, with a shower mat on it. She will come around with time. xxxBetty and the Girlies... Remember that I learned to walk holding on to a Westie. Just a few minutes, every day with a soft brush, touching their feet and face, is all that it takes to get them used to being handled and groomed and there really shouldnt be any problems. Remember, they are DOGS and not Children and, they really shouldnt present such a problem when it comes to grooming (and behaving in general). My Mum tells me that from the moment I came home from the Maternity Unit, I had a Westie at my side. Perhaps this is why I find it so hard to accept bad behaviour one. Lucy. In her defence, she had spent all afternoon with a little Terrier (breed will remain unnamed) just a month older than Molly whose owners thought it funny that he had tried to bite everything, her, the brush, the shower hose etc. I would let Molly go for a visit first before she has her hair cut. If she has a play and hears all the sounds without having anything done she won't be so nervous when it is for real. I am sure she is used to being brushed and having her teeth cleaned etc, so she will be fine. Jan. The Oregon Girlies... May 20 at 09:31 Re: Grooming Don't worry about it, Just explain to the groomer that it is her first time to be groomed, and let her know it is ok if she isn't able to do it all this first time, be willing to take her back. I am sorry if my post about Daisy caused any problem..That was a case of the groomer not following instructions. Molly will be just fine. Most groomers know how to handle the situation. If you are unsure go talk to the groomer first and tell her your concerns. I think you will feel better about it. xxxBetty and the Girlies... She is fiesty, but very well behaved. She minds better than most kids I know. These little dogs can be taught to behave and I'm proud to say that for the most part, mine do. About the only thing I know to do is to work with her as much as possible before her appointment. If she mouths you or the comb at all, correct her. I'd also use the hairdryer as Betty suggested and if you have either clippers or a beard trimmer so she gets used to the noise. I took Elliot the first time at 4 months just so he'd be conditioned at an early age. Maybe your groomer would work with her over 2 or 3 sessions rather than to do it all in one day. Elliot puts up with the grooming but is still a 'wiggle worm' as the groomer calls it. It's a wonder he ever comes out looking halfway decent at all! You should perhaps brush her and handle her a lot-make it a regular thing like a game rewarding her for good behaviour. Play with her feet, her ears, etc...on a regular basis too. She should also puchase a soft nylon 'muzzly thing' and get you used to having it on your nose, as, for sure, if you should so much as think of sinking your teeth in the poor Groomer, you are going to have one stuck on your nose before you can even line 'em up!!!!!. Whining and crying won't gain you any Brownie Points because a Groomer who can't stick her hands in water cos' she has holes in them, is one that can't work. Having said all that, most Groomers know just how to handle Westies that have never been taught any manners, as they all should have been from a young Pup, so grit your teeth and bear it. Blame your Mum for not getting you used to being groomed in the first place. My first grooming was by one of the top pro terrier handlers in the US, and when my mom came to get me, I was shaking and traumatized and I still hate the sound of clippers. Of course, I was supposed to be STRIPPED, not CLIPPED, anyway. My mom grooms me now and I fall asleep while she is stripping me. My mom usually holds my face to protect the nasty groomer and she tries to talk to me but I keep my eye on "you know who" Anyhow, mom has been brushing me since I was a baby. My hard coat is perfect..but I want to look like my kind. At 7 months, my coat isn't fully developed. When will that happen?
