Stripping vs. clipping

I'm wondering what your thoughts are on stripping vs. clipping. Max is 14 weeks old, and I read in another post that Cairns should begin being stripped at 16 weeks. My husband thinks clipping would be fine since we don't plan on showing him. Clippers & strippers (he he he), can you give me the pros & cons? Thanks!

Well, Im a westie, but its almost the same. I was accidentally clipped (long story) as a pup - my hair grew in soft and CURLY. I looked like a Bichon cross. My mom wanted to show me, so she let my hair grow out, and stripped me. N ow my hair is hard, straight, self-cleaning, sheds dirt, and is truly wonderful. My mom loves to "roll" my coat weekly, says it is relaxing - I don't know, I am usually sleeping on my table, as I think it is boring.

Depends if you want a harsh or soft coat. The Minkies are Westies but they're clipped and are soft.
I am never convinced that stripping isn't a bit barbaric myself !!

well, I strip my cairns... if you 'roll' the coat, you are pulling the oldest, dead hair out regularly.. they never look 'stripped'... always just right.

there is a third alternative.. The Mars Coat King is a rake that pulls some hair, and cuts others.. you can get it at the cairn mall.. you pull it thru their coat, like a comb.. and it cleans them up very nicely. I 've started using it on mine since it does a better job on the undercoat than i do....

you can check it out..and help Cairn rescue at the same time.

My dogs are not TC members (yet!), but I do lurk quite often.
Does the Mars coat king still leave them a bit shaggy looking?
I've been hand stripping, but have fallen behind, due to arthritis in my hands, so I'm wondering if this is a good alternative that will leave them looking a bit rough- I like that look!
All I've done lately is to keep them brushed, so they are even beyond shaggy!

Will this work for Westies too, then--give them the Westie look?

The Minkies' groomer has stopped handstripping now and uses one of these instead if people want it done...she says it's far too time-consuming.
