Itchies

I have just checked the message Board after several long months, and found where Janet and Katie have found some relife with Fish oil. We have been giving Sis Primrose Oil for about 1 year and it seems to help some but She still has to stop and scratch every few minutes. The Vet recomemded Benadryl 25 mg 1X a day this did no good at all. anyone with any suggestions other than trying Fish oil with vit E

Thank You Sis

Re: Itchies Reply to this Message

I've given my itchie girl, Brodie, fish oil and evening primrose, and this seems to help. I also put Gold Bond medicated powder on her skin twice a day, and if she gets a flare up, we use an antibiotic cream. Benadryl spray is also good to get her to stop scratching. Good luck, I know skin problems can be frustrating.

Re: Itchies Reply to this Message

Elliot is only allergic to 2 things that I know of and that's Beef (doesn't eat it anymore) and mold spores from the grass (from Fall to early Sspring). The Vet said to give him 1000 mg of Evening Primrose oil daily for the first 2 weeks then 500 mg there after and also either 500 mg of Fish Oil or Flax Seed oil daily. He is bathed weekly in Bio-Groom Oatmeal Shampoo with a couple touch ups on the paws and private areas each week. This seems to keep him itch free.

I suggest you first find out what Sis is allergic to then eliminate that from her enviroment. It's much better to get rid of the problem rather than to treat the symptoms. Then the things you can't get rid of (Grass, in Elliot's case) you treat for that. I use a vinegar/water mixture on his feet when coming in from outside along with drying them well and bathing them often. Seems to take care of his problem.

Re: Itchies Reply to this Message

My dog has the itchies but we dont' know what it is. I took him to the vet and they said that his coat and skin is healthy and there is not any fleas. We even put a flea collar on him and he still scratches alot. Do any of you have any thought of what is causing him to itch?

Kellie,
I don't know what the original itchy problem is, but I would ditch the flea collar --- that could be aggravating the problem.

Many dogs have terrible reactions to flea collars and flea powders. Ask your vet about advantage or frontline as an alternative to a flea collar.
I won't use those on my guys.

Re: Itchies Reply to this Message

At our vets advice, I switched my Girlies from Oil of Primrose to Flax seed oil and fish oil..Fish oil has necessary fatty acids not available in primrose or flax oils. I have noticed a really big improvement in my Girlies, I give them 1000 mgs a day alternating the oils, they take them from my hand readily.
You can also use Tavhist orally if it gets real bad, but since the oil kicked in I haven't used it.
I agree about the flea collar, Advantage or Frontline is the way to go.

Re: Itchies Reply to this Message

My owner has started me on Fish Oil he could not find 500 mg so they are giving me 1000 mg 1 X a day and it seem's to help. My question is is this to much ? is there any chance that it will cause any problem's.

Re: Itchies Reply to this Message

I have seen no problems in the Girlies..It is a natural food so I can't see why it would cause a problem. and it works amazingly well.

Re: Itchies Reply to this Message

Just read your post on the "itches". I have a seven year old Westie, Mickey. Well, I have been battling the dry skin issues with him for a long time now and tryed so many things. I mean we tryed it all!
We now have been itch- free for almost a year it is is all due to his food. The reason I tryed new food was because I tryed a new Vet. I thought maybe I should try another Vet because I just didn't think my previous vet took Mc's dry skin seriously and didn't seem to ever really help him. Well, the new vet did by giving him a cortizone shot and putting him on a new food. It is Science Hill Sensive Skin for adult dogs. It worked in less than a week and knock on wood, it is still working! I would NEVER have thought changing his food would do it, but it did. We now only have to go in about 2 times a year for a cortizone shot and that's it! He just gets "small" dry skin flair-ups in the Spring and Fall. It used to be 12 months out of the year! It is so nice to have my dog be comfortable and have healthy skin and a pretty coat! Good luck and maybe try the Science Hill.
Best Wishes,
Chris

Re: Itchies Reply to this Message

What you need to understand Chris is that it is the cortisone shots that are controlling the itch, not necessarily the food. Cortisone should be used as a last resort in controlling itches, and should never be a permanent fix if other methods work. The Omega fatty acids provided in these oils help by adding moisture to the skin, which sometimes is all that is needed. Cortisone has many side effects, we hope your vet made you aware of them.

Re: Itchies Reply to this Message

STOP ITCHIES NOW. NO, IT IS NOT THE WEATHER(in most cases)!
I have submitted many posts just this evening alone, and it all seems to go back to the one big problem we all have faced...ITCHY, SCRATCHY, BITING, RED, INFLAMED, MISERY!
DOSE OF STERIODS TO "FIX" IT TEMPORARILY. NOT!!!!!
Please go to the care/maintenience section here or go to the web site:
www.westierescueca.com
There you will find the westie diet. IT WORKS. Give it a period of 3-4 weeks and change the diet GRADUALLY as you would with any dietary change.
I did not believe it would work, but it DID FOR MY GIRLS!! I think it is wonderful all Westie/Cairn/Scottie people should try it. It has helped and I think it can help you too.
