Heartworm Prev?
This question is for my little rescue terrier-mix, Sophie. Sophie weighs about 15 lbs. now...she was terribly under-weight when we got her in May. My question is about heartworm preventative. My other 3 are on Interceptor and have never had a problem. Sophie gets an upset stomach from it and throws it up several hours after taking it. I plan to check with my vet next week, but has anyone experienced this, and if so, is there a brand that is less upsetting to dog's tummys?

Re: Heartworm Prev?
Sherrie, you might want to try Heartguard or Heartguard Plus.

Re: Heartworm Prev?
We used to use Heartguard Plus and it upset all Westie tummies. When Harley came here he had sarcoptic mange and they used Revolution to treat that. Since that takes care of fleas, ticks, and many other things in addition to Heartworm prevention, we gave it a go and their tummy troubles went away. It is a bit more expensive per month $13.00 per dose for up to a 20 lb dog and $14.00 a month for 20-40 lbs. But it is all they have to use and works even for the little poop eaters--to help protect agains some of the stuff they can pick up in case they do that and it guards against some ear mites as well. And our newest addition (also named Sophie--failed fostering 101 AGAIN) just came off heartworm treatment and it was okay for her to use it!
Hope this helps a bit.

Re: Heartworm Prev?
Well, we had to see if she was going to survive the heartworm treatment but she fit in her like a glove. I now have black dog hair absolutely everywhere in this house--and TONS of it and a little trouble with my asthma from that but she and Harley--we call them the Twins. She takes no stuff from him at all--gives him more then he gives actually. It is not final on paper yet but she stole our hearts on the first day.

Re: Heartworm Prev?
After reading you post about the Interceptor, you have got me to wondering if they changed something. I use it because I was told it's the only one that also gets rid of hook worms. But the last time I used it the "sisters" got diarrhea. They are due for another pill but I am talking to the vet on Wednesday before I give them another one.

Re: Heartworm Prev?
We use Heartgard Plus and have never had any problems with it. You hear negative things about every medicine, but I heard that Revolution could cause very violent personality changes in dogs so I have never wanted to try that. It is funny too because my cousin's little Boston Terrier is on it and he started biting people!!

Re: Heartworm Prev?
We use Revolution with no problem at all. It's good for the girls as they get itchy.
