Mills in Lancaster County

Here is a site that was featured on a mailing list I am on. We forget sometimes.

I LOVE to go to Amish country---but will not be going for quite a while after reading this.

However under the title, "What you can do to stop puppy mills". There is an article about a young lady that went to a pet store and caused a scene. I had planned to do that locally when someone had reported some Westies being sold there (not that I do not care about other breeds-because I do--but one person cannot do everything for everyone). I had planned to go there and very loudly point out where the parents came from, etc. However, I thought to ask my son first what the reaction I might get would be (he is in law enforcement). He told me that I could be arrested for trespass if I did this. So one might want to consider the consequences before one acts. And perhaps your laws are different.

I can, however, boycott Lancaster County and begin a writing campaign and educate my husband who does business with Amish farmers!

Sincerely,

Before I knew about puppy mills, I bought my Snowy from a pet shop 16 years ago. When he passed away, I found his papers and figured maybe I could find his breeder and get another Westie from them. I found them on my computer and I was sick to my stomach and cried when I saw where Snowy came from. He came from Lancaster PA the Amish county. All I can say is Thank God I got him as a little puppy and he didn't have to live in those conditions.

I have a whole new feeling about the Amish at this time. I tell EVERYONE I know not to buy from a Petstore. We only have one pet store that sells animals, mostly cats from around town but I still don't shop there.

We live in Lancaster County. Heidi is an Amish Westie, and Holly is a Mennonite Westie. I don't believe they were from mills - they were more "backyard breeder" situations. Now that I know what is going on here, any future dogs we adopt will be rescues or from a reputable breeder. I would not trade my two girls for the world, but I shudder to think of the conditions that thousands of these little souls are living in, and just miles from my house. I will definitely write my legislature. The Amish are a strange bunch. Their horrible treatment of animals is legendary here - I wonder how they can justify that, given their "Godly" way of life.
