Dont feel too bad for them

All Col Potter dogs are in foster homes - just like mine, where they get plenty of love, cuddles kissies, toys etc.

We do sometimes vet them for a while to make sure they dont have something that will get our dogs sick, but onto the foster home.... until just the right forever home shows up.

We have had some stay in a foster homes for up to about a year... but thats just how it works. If you put in regular updates and let people know all about your foster, you have a better chance of getting them adopted.

That's very true...I think it's great they're all in "proper" foster care.

Yep, as a foster Mommy for both Col. Potter's and WRM, I can tell you the pups get all kinds of love, cuddles, and special treatment.

After the first few days of the dogs getting used to one another, each foster I have had has worked its way into the pack and become a member of same. They have each been different but they were all loved.

And giving them up is usually very difficult--and heartwrenching. But it is what we signed on to do--so we do it.

Each time I send a foster on its way, I know it is going to a home that has been checked out thoroughly; that conversations have been had with the new family and that the dog is getting a wonderful home. Both of the groups I foster for do things a little differently and that is fine too--I can adjust.

When I foster for WRM, I get the dog the vet care because the dogs I foster for them are usually ones that I have been able to get from contacts here in Wisconsin. When the pup comes home from the hospital after their surgery, I sit up with them and give them back massages--. I give them pain meds when they need them, and cover them up with the blankey wriggles off.

Each of our pups watches over them too; they have roles in the foster care of the dogs too!

Our Molly always knows when they need the pain meds--she is Nurse Molly--our medic alert dog. Our Mindy keeps them in line and assigns them a place in the pack and gives them "the business" if they get out of line. Our Harley works his miracles on the ones that are shy and withdrawn--he gets them to begin to interact with both the dogs and with the humans--Harley is the clown!

With Col. Potter's someone else gets them the medical care. That is okay too. We have lots of other work to do.

When they leave we do what we call the "ugly cry"--you know that one--when your face is all scrunched up and you are just plain ugly--but you cannot help yourself--this little one has worked its way into your heart. There is something to love about each one of them. And most of them are eager to be loved--even if they have trouble trusting humans. That is part of our job as foster families--to teach the dog that some humans can be trusted and will be nice to them; to let them know that there can be joy, happiness and full bellies in their lives and that they can be warm in the winter and cool in the summer--that they can run and play and not have to have puppies or make puppies anymore--that they can run free.

We each do this for a different reason. Among mine is the fact that someone fostered 3 of my dogs for me until I could find them. I also do it in Maggy's memory--that she was a rescue and a rescue person fostered her for me--Auntie Georgia.

So, please feel happy for these pups--. We don't know, most of the time, exactly what they have endured--and are often afraid to speculate. We do know, however, what they are going to--and for that we can all be happy!

Well said Pam. I love doing rescue even with the heartbreak we go thru. I am also pleased to see Doc has interest in him. He has stolen my heart.

Re: Col Potter Status 10-27-03 Reply to this Message

hmmm we must look at this differently.. I haven't cried at having any of them go... I feel like I'm launching one of my kids into their grand new future (bittersweet, but fun)

I think of my fosters as visiting cousins when they come.. and do enforce a certain amount of separation - the rescues sleep and eat in their crate.. I have boarded friends dogs when they are on vacation...so I'm used to hug and leave..
Mine have all gone within a month so far, so it's been easy to rationalize... since my next one will be 10 yr old Sedona... who knows. I'm sure she'll be harder to say goodbye to.

Well I guess I am a WUSS too because I cry. Heck I am crying before my current foster even leaves!! And it's not because I don't KNOW that they will be SO much better off with their new home, because I know they will - because for one thing, the people adopting them NEED a dog whereas I have two lovely dogs of my own & don't NEED another (at least not now) but I just get all mushy & sorry for myself I guess.

Hey Corinne - I didn't know you were getting another foster??!! Way to go... I haven't dared mention that Cody might be leaving soon - wonder who they will send up to me next in the WILDS OF VERMONT!!??

See, you can't help yourself - it is so rewarding to help, even if you cry, that you just keep coming back for more...

Do all Fosters end up with a loving home? Reply to this Message

I've always wondered how many of them never get placed with a loving forever home.

Yes they do... some take a little longer than others but all have made it to a home once a CP kid. Well, of course, unless illness stops them. God rest Teddy's soul but he was in a loving foster home! Darlene the lurker

Re: Do all Fosters end up with a loving home? Reply to this Message

Ha Ha.. and some of our foster homes cant bear to have them go... so they end up in our group of Foster Flunkies... foster moms who adopt their charges... We are warned (repeatedly) to put our adoption form in (yes, we have to go thru the same stuff) the second we dont want parted...so that no one else will be disappointed...
We do our best for finding the perfect homes... but we have had a few misses.. we had one dog returned the second day because 'she was too ugly'.. NO joke.. Fiona had hot spots.. and EXPLICT pics had been sent to the home... this woman had decided she wanted that dog and was very good at saying what she thought we wanted to hear..
Fiona did end up in a different loving home and was very happy there.

Re: Col Potter Status 10-27-03 Reply to this Message

and Ugly is what that woman was.. poor Fiona KNEW she was being dumped back. She certainly wasnt a show dog, but she was sweet as sunshine and she came back so sad it was terrible.
She actually ended up with Elijah's foster mom as a forever dog... so you know how loved she was.. but Fiona died last summer of a stroke (I think). at least her last months were happy - very happy.
