Need Advice (kinda long)

Hi all,

I have been reading this list for a little over two months now. I found you while looking for information about Westies when I was researching whether to own one (which I am proud to say I now have two precious puppies Rosie and Basil).

I have also been reading about the rescue's and the rescue organizations as well.

About a week or so ago, there was post about little Missy in Oregon who needs to have surgery on both her back legs and needs a forever home. I saw this and forwarded the information to my younger sister who has been thinking about getting another dog. She is very interested in little Missy. I told her to contact the rescue organization which she did. However, the emails she has received back have been a bit cryptic and cold (in my opinion). She was informed that if she wanted to adopt Missy before she had surgery, then my sister would be responsible for paying for the surgery as well as a $500 adoption fee. On top of all this, my sister would have to pay for a plane ticket to Oregon (we are in New Jersey). My question is, is this standard practice? My sister (I think) is willing to do the surgery but between the plane ticket to pick her up and the adoption fee it seems like a lot of money and my sister is now questioning whether this is a scam or not. I told her I would ask here since I really don't know all that much about it. I trust people on this list and I don't think it is a scam but I read the email that was sent to my sister and I was taken back a bit by the tone as well. If possible please let me know if this sounds ok. My sister would be a great home for this little girl and I think if it works out the little one would have the perfect forever home.

Thanks,
Beth

I would think it's OK if they wanted her to pay for the surgery and collect her herself but the $500 on top of that I think is bloody unreasonable. Plus if they emailed in the tone I'm imagining I'd have been very rude.
It's sad for the pup's sake but I'd not get involved with them unless I started laying down a few rules of my own. Have they even asked about your sister's personal circumstances or requested a home visit of any sort ? Sounds like a greedy bunch of people.

Lynda,

No they haven't mentioned a home visit but that could be due to the distance and maybe due to the fact that the inquiries were in the early stages. A home visit would not be an issue on my sister's side if they wanted to go that route. It is more the tone of the emails that has her concerned. The sad part is that my sister is starting to back away a bit from this because of the emails and her home would be perfect for Missy. My sister spoils her little Maltese like you wouldn't believe and any pup that is part of her home is a member of the family and is treated as such.

Thank you for the response. It is appreciated.

Thanks,
Beth

According to their website, their adoption fee covers all costs to make the dog ready to live with the adoptive family including surgery. If they say different to your Sister then ........

It sounds to me as if they don't have the little dogs best interest in mind just their own.
I would tell them I will pay for her operation but with the vet of my choice and to forget the big fee and ask how many other people have stepped forward willing to take on the responsibility of this little one?

Gosh, this really surprised me to read that they have a willing person ready to adopt and MEDICALLY TREAT a little foster, and they still want such a HUGE rescue donation, also knowing of the additional expenses involved with travel.

Col. Potter has been so blessed to find the most wonderful people to adopt our special needs kids, and we have always taken into consideration what additional costs are involved. I really can't say anything about this rescue group, since I don't know anything about them, however, I cannot believe that they have not treated your sister with kindness here. We have placed many of our kids for $1.00 to make our contract legal with a monatary exchange, just knowing that one of our kids is going to need treatment of some type. We have also had people who wanted to make our donation since they were financially able to and they knew the huge expense we already had, however, for the life of me, I can't believe that this is their policy.

I want to thank everyone for the advice and information. I don't know what my sister is going to do at this point. She is taken aback by the emails she has received and is a bit "gun-shy" now. I will tell her about the little one in the star ledger as based on the area code it sounds like this is right by us.

I feel very sorry for the poor dog who needs a home and may have missed out on a good one over this episode.

Again, thanks ...

If she wants to adopt a rescue let her try SOSDOGS. They are a rescue group for small dogs in NJ out of Cherry Hill. I live in NJ and that is where Katie my Yorkie came from. Good Luck. You can e mail me if you want more info.

In the general forum, there was a post yesterday titled "One gorgeous Westie" about a Westie on Petfinder that was in a shelter in NJ (Mt. Holly?). Might want to check that out...good luck!
