Rescues and Brucellosis

Those of you involved in rescue, particularly commercial breeding rescue
need
to take this to heart. Rescue groups need to change some of their
policies
(if they have not already) to include Brucellosis testing as this CAN
HAPPEN.

Tonight, a wonderful lady named Robin Pressnall, Executive Director of
Small
Paws Rescue contacted me about some rescues she received that came up
with
Brucellosis. They rescued 19 Bichons from a commercial breeding
operation that
was closing down. It is a ROUTINE for them to take them to the vet for
a
checkup, which includes a Brucellosis test. 12 of the 19 came up
positive for
Brucellosis. NO FALSE POSITIVES. A first for them, but pretty scary
for all
concerned. Thankfully they didn't bring these dogs to their homes prior
to
dropping them off to the vet.

You can read their story here:

Please take a moment and read their story. Please feel free to pass
this
email on to other groups.

If you belong to a rescue organization, please, take a moment to make
sure
they are testing rescues for Brucellosis. If you are unsure about this
disease, I encourage you to visit my website to learn about this disease
and to
remember - it's NOT JUST SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED. Don't put your pets and
loved ones
at risk.

I encourage breeders to require this test on both stud and brood bitches
and
just because it's a friend, ask for the test. Be safe and don't risk
your
dogs health on something so inexpensive as the Brucellosis test.

The REAL scary part is this guy they purchase the dogs from in IOWA has
been
selling dogs out the back door for YEARS - how many of them were
infected?
Where was the USDA in all this?

Thanks for listening to me 'preach' again :O)

I'm not sure about if we test for brucellosis, but Col Potters does put puppy mill dogs in quarantine at the vets before they go to foster homes.

Re: Rescues and Brucellosis Reply to this Message

Hi: Thanks for the article. As an FYI, Col. Potter has ALWAYS tested for Brucellosis. Since George and I occasionally breed our Cairns, we are "death on wheels" when it comes to testing, not only our dogs but anyone who may be approved to breed to one of our kids has a huge list of requirements.

In CP's history, we have had two false positives on the test which provides the quicker results. We kept these dogs in isolation, had them retested and both came up negative.

However, a false positive is common if you test while the bitch is either going into season, in season or just out, and both of these girls fell into that category.

Brucellosis testing has always been our protocol.
