Westie still in pet store

I went back to that pet store I mentioned where they had that 4 month old Westie and the salesman said he was "old". I went back for fish tank filters and my curiousity if he was still there got the better of me.

Well he is still there. The first time I asked the price, he was $1200, when I went the 2nd time he was $1119 and last night the salesman said he was "on sale" for $999. He has been there so long, it makes me so sad. He is the happiest little guy.

My question is, Is there some rescue that ever steps in under these circumstances? I really dont see them keeping him around much longer. He is about 4 1/2 months old and at 3 months old, they considered him old. Where do they go if no one buys the puppies in the store? I really cant have another dog in my apartment.

So if anyone has any info on rescues done in this type of situation please email me or post back here. I will do anything to help that I can.

So sorry to hear the little one is still there Diane... Hope the Rescue organisations can step in and get him out of there! Don't you have friends or relatives who are looking for a dog by any chance?

I hope some one takes this little guy. We just got a female Cairn (Missy) from a pet store she was 7 months old she had been there since she was 9 weeks.. everytime I went in to get fish supplies or something I would see her and it just broke my heart. I finally took my husband in and he couldn't stand it we brought her home. Our little Westie girl isn't very happy but we are on day 4 and its getting better... she had never been in the snow or grass... had a treat... just in a cage all that time so I know how you feel... She has learned alot in 4 days and is coming along good! Hope someone rescues him soon they won't regret it Westies are the greatest.. Cairns are great too!

The harsh news is that we cant help the dog IN THE STORE unless the store asks for our help.
We do get puppymill dogs in, - could be your dogs mom or pop... but generally the stores dont contact us.

Should I go in there in about 2 weeks and if he is still there, ask some questions? I wouldnt even know what to ask. I want to save him so bad! He has such terrier spirit, I dont want to see it broken.

Chance is a "PetStore" Reject Reply to this Message

Chance was taken to a vet to be PTS because he was a 'waste of time and money'....gratefully, the vet knew better and called a shelter who called rescue... he came as a foster and wormed his way into my heart... please keep an eye on that Westie... let them know rescue can take him if he isn't sold... the longer he's in there - the less appealing he'll be AND anxiety and other problems could pop up = not to mention physical maladies due to the lack of movement and excersise. :(

Angie,

Question ... if someone could get him out of the pet store would Rescue be willing to take him in and find him a good home?

I am answering for Angie and that would be a YES. But rescues cannot afford to pay for dogs from Pet Stores.

I will write Angie and tell her to come on the board and tell yes herself.

So do I go in there and ask for the manager and say that if he isnt sold and you are going to "get rid of him" that Westie Rescue will take him? What will they say?

I wouldn't as he's paid for the pup and he'll only dig his heels in and refuse.

I agree.. Our little Missy that was 7 months when we took her out of the cage at the pet store. Ran and ran for hours the first day chasing and playing with our westie Buffy.. She was so tired she could hardly walk by afternoon but she was ready for more... they need that exercise so much!

Re: Westie still in pet store Reply to this Message

Poor little guy. Diane, I wouldn't wait too long, he might 'get rid' of him at any time.

Why not go in, explain that you can not have another dog but you would be willing to connect the manager up with rescue. Also, prepare a place for the pup just in case he says 'take him', a friend, vet or maybe the spca, you just never know...

Good luck, you've got the TC power behind you too.

Re: Westie still in pet store Reply to this Message

As long as he will have a home, I would be able to take him with me to stay for a while. Not too long because I wouldnt want Murphy to get attached or anything. But I have never done anything like this so I need all the advise I can get.

Does it ever happen that someone buys him and then the "forever home" family reimburses the person who bought him. And the other question is, is rescueing him giving into the puppy mills? I wouldnt want to do that!

Re: Westie still in pet store Reply to this Message

Westie Rescue can always take him in - Nancy - Dutchess' mom - could help out, and a few other nearby homes. :)

I can't believe the price they have on him! Geesh!!

Yes. I applied to Westie Rescue of Missouri. I work with Angie and Luann promoting Westie Rescue through my paper, and also with the local Humane Society to try and find homes for unwanted dogs.
