Adopting from Across the Country

This might have been answered before but I haven't gone back through all the messages. Has anyone adopted a dog from across the country and if you did how did it work out. There is one I have seen that has no apps on her and I'm trying to still talk my husband into her but we're in the east, she's in the west and I'm wondering how she'd get here since we can't go there since we are tied here with our horse and other animals. Not saying we would get her even if we applied but she sounds so perfect and likes cats which here is a must but the location is the problem. Has anyone else had that problem and how was it solved? Thanks. Annie

Re: Adopting from Across the Country Reply to this Message

Well, assuming that the rescue group will adopt cross-country, there have been times when a pupper was flown from one spot to another. Going that far is tricky but it can be done.

Our first Westie came to us via plane from Colorado (to Wisconsin). She had a lay-over in Texas (she was obviously brilliant from the get-go--LOL). I know it is not the best way to go but I promised her --in my heart that she would have one day of hell and the rest of her life would be just wonderful. I think we have lived up to our end.

Re: Adopting from Across the Country Reply to this Message

Thanks Pam, the whole flying thing scares me to death, I would have to find the "Perfect" dog 3000 miles away, of course for me they are all perfect but the one I saw has no apps for her and likes cats and so many don't and she also isn't a puppy but is quite small, I would love a puppy too but one that is 2 yrs old would be out of the puppy chewing maybe. We had a Westie and she chewed EVERYTHING including all the ruffles off of my parent's couch and chairs, tables, walls, clothes, then she chewed the sheetrock but once she outgrew that she was great and so smart, she's been gone almost 20 yrs and I miss her every day. I'm still trying to get my man to say "Yes" to another animal in this house anyway but I was just wondering how a cross country adoption works if it works at all. Thanks. Annie

Re: Adopting from Across the Country Reply to this Message

I transported a dog to FL from Chicago more than a decade ago, as cargo... I personally would not do it again as this particular dog travels VERY badly in a car and wonder if that experience did not affect her.

Col. Potter does either transport to adoptive homes if good match otherwise. You can ask whatever group that has the dog what they do, what their policy is, etc. I am not certain but believe adopters with Col. P. who need assistance getting the dog across the country pay a transportation fee for miles covered (but double check that).

Another option is to either drive or fly across country and accompany the dog yourself. Then, there are transport companies who transport across the miles in air conditioned vans, etc. like Pets2Go.com. Good luck!

Darlene, Jolly and Charley the foster dude in FL (who may be traveling miles when HE goes home too!)

PS Darlene, good luck with your new little foster buckaroo! Hope he gets a great home. I have so much respect for the people who rescue these dogs from the horrors they face and then the people who will foster them, you all do a great job. I could never do it, just hearing about some of the stuff that happens to them makes me so sick if I saw it in person I'd probably drop dead so I have high praise for the people who can go in and do what they do and help these little guys. Thanks again

Re: Adopting from Across the Country Reply to this Message

Hi Darlene, I'm so happy he's going to a good home, I love happy endings. Since it's so far how is he getting there, will his new people be picking him up or what? That's the one thing I've been wondering about is how well they travel when it's far, guess it depends on the dog. Our Noah gets car sick so he would not do great on a big ride, we can get him up to my parent's house which is 2 hrs away and depending on the day sometimes he gets sick once or twice sometimes he doesn't get sick at all. I'd love for him to travel all over like our Westie did [She probably would have wanted to drive if she could have reached the pedals! She loved the car!]but he's so miserable in the car he stays home and guards the house when we go on short trips to the store and when we go away on vacation my parents stay here with him and the rest of the gang so they are never alone long and never go to a kennel or anything, always have someone they love watching over them. Thanks again and I hope your little foster baby will have a long and happy life in his new home. Annie

Re: Adopting from Across the Country Reply to this Message

Thanks Darlene, she is with the Col Potter rescue. She's SO CUTE but then they all are but I like the fact that she's good with cats since we have one, had 2 but lost one to a heart attack, it was very crushing, she was less than 5 and one minute she was fine the next dead, a shock and very horrible, our animals are our babies, they get more love than alot of kids, sad to say but it's true. Our cat Misty is 1/2 feral and it takes her awhile to adjust to new things and I don't even know how she'd like a new dog, I'm only thinking about it because we are building on to our house and she'd never have to see the dog if she didn't want to. Our Border Collie Mix loves her, she loves him and I'm still working on this issue with everyone, just wish they could all talk [Well my man does enough talking for the rest but I think he's softening after hearing how bad some of these dogs are treated, our Noah was a rescue, his mother and all the puppies were very abused] and give their opinions, I have TRIED so hard not to look at the little faces that need homes even deleted the sites but can't stay away. Thanks for the info, I apprecaite it alot, sounds like it might be tricky to get a dog from far away not saying they'd let me have her anyway but I was wondering how it worked if it worked. Thanks again. Annie

Re: Adopting from Across the Country Reply to this Message

Annie: I live in Washington State and adopted one that was in Chicago. I just arranged a flight out there, the foster mom met my son-in-law who made the trip to get him, at the airport and two hours later he was on a plane back to Washington. Took a whole day but he didn't have to fly cargo and that is what was important to me. The foster mom got the sherpa bag he needed and I just shipped it back to her when I got Taz here. Different airlines have different restrictions so you need to check with them first before making definite plans but it is very workable.

Hi Washington Gang! Thank You! Glad little Taz made it to his new home safe and sound!!!!! Our problem on this end is that none of us will fly! The flight makes the most sense but even if I was lucky enough to get the OK from my husband and they gave me the dog I have my eye on nobody here will get on a plane!!!! We live real rural so there isn't a close airport, the airport is drivable [2 hrs] but they don't get big planes coming in, don't know about the one in Newburg NY. I checked out a van but they only do the east but gave me another name so I'm going to check with them, the plane would be faster that's for sure. Thanks so much for your help and if my dream comes true maybe I can get someone to fly there, there is one person I just thought of I might be able to ask, he flys all over the world and might even go to Washington on Business so if things came together maybe I could ask him. Thanks again and give the gang pats! Annie

Re: Adopting from Across the Country Reply to this Message

Well, as WRM and Louisiana know I adopted from them~ flew round trip same day to get my babies. They were in sherpa bags with me in the plane. Well behaved ladies they were. I just made sure there was lay over time so they can do buisness and run during the trip home. But like Pam, one hell day for a glorious rest of days :) WELL worth it for me (and note I DON"T fly LOL! but for a westie love~ anything is possible ~!)

Re: Adopting from Across the Country Reply to this Message

Thanks Nancy, I just went to one of the Westie sites and saw 2 puppies, they are in Missouri I think. Not sure how far that is from us....waiting for my husband to get home so he can see their pictures since we used to have a Westie maybe they'd soften him up more. Mandy was a great dog, so smart but I don't tell my Noah how smart Mandy was, don't want to hurt his feelings!!!!! He's precious, love him LOTS but in the smarts dept. he's lacking but that's OK. He failed Puppy K. so that's telling you something, he knows all his commands just does them when he feels like it and we can't stop him from jumping no matter what we do. I have to say I wouldn't get on a plane even for my dream dog, as much as I'd want the dog I can't fly, sad but true, had 2 SCARY plane rides and that was it no more I have nightmares about it but I did find a place who will take the dog in a van but I think this Westie place requires you to go pick the dog up yourself, don't know. Nothing will be settled 'til my husband says OK anyway but I like to get all my facts first then I can sound like I know what I'm talking about when I'm arguing my case. Thanks again! Annie

Re: Adopting from Across the Country Reply to this Message

Thank You Tara, the carry on sounds good, I have fears of putting a dog in the cargo section or where ever they put them didn't realize they'd let you carry them on like you and others have said too. I am so clueless to all of this as you can tell. I guess first I have to get the OK from my husband then the OK from the adoption place then think about what dog I get and where it comes from but I was thinking I need to know this stuff before I apply just so I can tell him how it all works since he said we can't drive cross country like I don't know that, I don't go far from home except if my parents stay with the other animals and that's just for a few days and I'm able to get home in a day if I have to. Thanks again. Annie
