CPCRN October WOW report

from Michelle, BOD:
Through the end of October , here's our year-to-date statistics (and, my dear friends, these are ALL records to date!)
We have RESCUED 259 Cairns
We have RECEIVED and reviewed 900 Applications
We have COMPLETED 561 RefChecks
We have INSPECTED 298 applicant homes
We have TRANSPORTED dogs over 126,136 volunteer transport miles
We have ADOPTED 201 Cairns into loving forever homes of their own!

The statistics speak for themselves, my friends. But more importantly, they speak for those without voices of their own...the needy little Cairns that ALL of you who help us in our efforts work so diligently to serve. Thank you, my friends, from me and the other members of the Board. And thank you most of all from all the Cairns you have helped to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome this year! An enormous "AHROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"!!!! to all of you from all of them!

This is such WONDERFUL News, alot of work and dedication and it is paying off. Hope all the ones that haven't gotten homes yet will have them ASAP. Unfortunately I won't be able to adopt a Cairn or a Westie or any other dog as I had planned, we had the BIG EXPERIMENT the other day bringing our neighbor's dog down to meet ours since our Noah doesn't know other dogs, it wasn't done the way it should have been since we have alot of land, they do too so the dogs know all of it and it's all their territory and it's hard to get Noah anywhere away since he gets carsick, anyway the outcome was that if there wasn't a fence between them I think Noah would have torn into Patches, [Patches was fine once he tried to make friends and Noah was so mean Patches just turned his attention to the 6 or so deer that were watching this whole process too!] I watched my SWEET dog turn into Cujo, he went nuts and the longer our neighbor stood there....I tried to stay away so I wasn't by either dog since they both think they own me because I take care of Patches at his house when they go away and we are very attached and Noah knows his smell which I thought would be good since they both know each other's smell they might think of each other as friends but it was the worst, the longer Patches was there the worst Noah got, we thought he might warm to the idea after awhile but he was VICIOUS then I felt bad for Patchs so when we got him out of site I was fussing over him telling him I'm sorry Noah was so mean.....so no dog siblings for him and I got a big SEE from The Cat Man so anyway we might get a kitten we don't know but I really wanted to adopt either a Cairn or a Westie, I was all set to send in an app. on Friday, [already have my info into the Westie girl in our area] but then thought Patches might come visit on Sat. and that was what happened and it was a disaster, I cried most of the day. OH well, I was hoping to do my part by adopting one of these precious babies but that won't be happening now but you all are the BEST I have so much respect for you it's hard to tell you how much and hope that all the dogs eventually get their forever homes, again THANK YOU for all of your hard work and how you've helped me with all my ?'s too. Annie

Did you have them both on leads ? Only that can have a lot of mild-mannered dogs ready to kill sometimes....

Hi Lynda and Minkies, no Patches was on a lead, and Noah in a fence which I found out later is NOT the way to do it....I've been in contact with a Westie Rescue lady and she said that if a dog ever comes in that might work out for us we can take Noah down to meet it on neutral territory but when my husband saw Noah being like he was, we'd never seen anything like that from him since he's always so loving he said no way so someday in the future which I don't want to think about a future without Noah I already told him I WILL HAVE A WESTIE AND A CAIRN get them at the same time or close together....as it is now I think we will be getting a kitten but then maybe we won't, we don't know, it upsets me since I'm the one always wanted to be surrounded by animals and I am but only one of each, none of the ones I have like others where other people I know who never even wanted dogs or cats but took in strays now have a house full and they all get along fine....guess it's just my curse....I know I sound like I'm feeling sorry for myself now and I guess I am since I had visions of Noah and another dog playing and having fun and instead he was like Cujo, thankfully Patches ignored the whole thing and wasn't traumatized but as I said I haven't given up it's just put on hold. Thanks. Annie

Re: CPCRN October WOW report Reply to this Message

Hi Corrine, Patches is male, all the dogs our 2 neighbors have are male so I know that was a mistake right off, it was horrid and after seeing that my husband says no way not now anyway, in the future I don't want to think about right now I WILL have both a Westie and a Cairn....I love my Noah more than anything and was just hoping he would enjoy a playmate but he went nuts, maybe if Patches was a girl he'd be better, when Spring comes I might get in contact with the obedience school lady [She closes in the winter since she works outside] and see if she can help with this problem. Away from home he might be OK, he was when he met dogs at my parents but then he went the opposite direction, hid behind me but he's also so protective, like we have a carpenter working on our house and he just came in and Noah put himself between me and Bob, he does that all the time except with our cat, the cat I can do anything with but with people and now I guess other dogs he thinks he has to be protective. I love him so much but he can be a strange buckaroo at times but it does make me feel good he is protective except if someone rings the doorbell he hides, then I'm on my own!!!!!!!!! Thanks again for everything. Annie

Re: CPCRN October WOW report Reply to this Message

Hi Annie,

Just wanted to add my two cents in here. I had a dog that was not well socialized with other dogs when he was younger (my fault .. I didn't know any better) and he reacted the same way towards other animals that your Noah did. It didn't seem to matter to him whether he was in our yard or not ... the catalyst (so to speak) was me. As long as I was around he felt the need the protect me (again my fault as I never made clear to him I was Alpha and didn't need protecting). Anyhow, I want to caution you about the kitten as my little guy had issues with all animals not just dogs. Also, I do want to tell you that was only like this until he had established to the newcomer that he was in charge. Then he just pretty much ignored the new comer. This may be what is going on with Noah in that he is trying to establish his dominance towards Patches.

Just thought I would share my story so that you do not think that Noah is "Cujo". My little guy was a sweetheart to anything that walked on two legs ... he just had no use for other four legged animals.

Hugs,
Beth & the Herbs

Re: CPCRN October WOW report Reply to this Message

Hi Beth & The Herbs, Sorry I didn't get back to you, I hadn't checked back here last night since I was on looking for cats, my husband says no problem with a cat [He never really wanted another dog so he wasn't alot of help there and when he saw the way Noah was on Sat. he said no way another dog is coming in this house as long as we have Noah and he means it this time, so it's a divorce or no dog!!!! For right now I'll keep the man!!!!!]and Noah has never had problems with a cat, we had Misty when he got here but then adopted a little stray and he was so good and gentle with her was never jealous at all even when I'd hold her, he'd want to be petted or brushed at the same time but I did both of them at once, no problem. She died and we never got another and now we're thinking another since as much as I love my Misty she's not a lap cat but don't know about Misty with another cat since she's the one that hated the cat we took in....this is the most CRAZY house, I tried to stay away when Patches was down so I wasn't involved at all but we were talking to our neighbor last night and he said he'd never seen anything like the way Noah acted, we all thought that the longer we had Patches there Noah would settle down but he didn't he just got more vicious....we thought taking him to Puppy Kindergarten was going to make him socialized and it did for a few months but we should have kept him in school just so he could see other dogs, getting him to school was a nightmare though since even though it's only like 15 minutes away he'd get sick at least twice and he'd be miserable but I think I'm gong to talk to the teacher and bring him if she'll let me just so he'll get to know other dogs because I don't like his actions, if another dog did get in his fence I think he'd kill it. He is fine with the cat though, loves her and hopefully if we get another he'll be fine with it, we'll be careful for sure. I've been in contact with the lady and she's helping me with some ideas how maybe Misty would like a kitten more than an adult, what we are checking into is a kitten, just have to fill out the papers and it's ours if we want it, wish we knew what Misty wanted, I want it since so much as I love Misty she's real independent and isn't a lap cat, this new kitten is a cuddler and that is what I miss so for now we'll probably be getting a kitten but someday in the future I'll have a Westie and a Cairn I already told the cat man that, there will be both in this house [or I won't be] and both coming at the same time if we can manage it so there is less of a problem and he's said OK to that. As you can tell the animals pretty much run us, even the horse....we do what they want rather than what we want, this cat decision wouldn't be hard if I did what I want, it would be here by now but I'm thinking about Misty but the lady seems to know alot about cats and has been real helpful and we shall see but I thank everyone for their help, you've all been so great!!! Annie
