Asking prayers for Basil
Note from his foster mom.. please keep him in your prayers
Basil will be spending the night at the vet hospital, but will be coming home tomorrow. Today he had a complete blood work-up and X-rays. They were able to determine that the apparent fluid in his chest cavity was scarring and not fluid. Any number of things could have caused this and it is unclear at this point whether it is a stable condition or an ongoing problem. Pinpointing the exact cause would require some very invasive procedures. Since he has been on one antibiotic or another since we got him it is anyones guess whether they are simply having no effect or merely keeping something at bay without actually curing it. The current plan is to try some other meds, including prednisone and to continue to monitor him, probably with follow-up x-rays in a couple of weeks. The scarring is akin to adhesions and inhibits the lungs from expanding properly. Danielle has given me several things to try diet-wise to replace beneficial bacteria destroyed by the anti-biotics and to put some meat on his little bones. The diagnosis is not the worst thing we were considering, but is still a mystery that may never be solved. His future remains unclear.

He's a sweet pup Corinne. Re: "Pinpointing the exact cause would require some very invasive procedures." I hope they are not going to put him through this in hopes of maybe finding an answer???

Re: Asking prayers for Basil
Respiratory problems can be SO hard to diagnose, and often do involve invasive procedures that really wouldn't change the way the condition is being treated. I adopted a foster with a chronic respiratory condition, and it was a matter of keeping him comfortable until quality of life became an issue. Sakki was 12 and had a good 10 months with me. Best wishes to little Basil, in memory of Sakki, who was one of the sweetest cairns I've ever had the privilege to know.
