Police arrest three for bird killings: Police say teen committed crime in theft attempt
By STEPHANIE POTTER - H&R Staff Writer DECATUR - The killings of three birds at the Scovill Zoo happened during a theft-attempt gone bad, police said in court documents released Wednesday.
The information was released on the same day Decatur Park District rangers arrested three Decatur men, two for their alleged involvement in the Oct. 31 killings of two Chilean flamingos and a white pelican, and a third for allegedly hiding evidence.
The men, Sean M. Riley, 26, Lloyd G. Pringle, 19, and Brandon Gossard, 19, were described as acquaintances of a 15-year-old youth who authorities think actually killed the birds. The youth was arrested and briefly detained at the Sangamon County Detention Center in November. The case against him is pending.
Macon County State's Attorney Jack Ahola obtained warrants for the arrest of the three men Wednesday morning, and they were taken into custody within hours.
Prosecutors allege in court documents that Riley directed the youth to commit a theft at the zoo, and Pringle went with the youth to the zoo and helped him get over a fence. Riley allegedly gave the youth clothing, a backpack and a knife that were used in the crime. Police said the target of the theft was chickens...
