A Terrier Question II
Thanks again for everyone's input with my first question- most helpful.
question # 2: Housebreaking- your suggestions are most welcome.
Yes we use a crate when we go out and she is fed on a regular schedule, but the water bowl is down all day- which may need to be removed, in retrospect.
Our pup of 5 months is not housebroken- am trying to come up with better solutions to resolve this.
She will go outside to do her business, however as she is free in the house, with our children and other 2 dogs, she is still having accidents. She is put out on a regular basis, but still has accidents in the house.
Any suggestions on better housebreaking suggestions?
thanks!
Barbara

Re: A Terrier Question II
I'd like to chime in and say from what I have read, terriers are difficult to housetrain and can take up to a year. Mishy was trained by 6 months and that was with my mom taking her out EVERY DAY EVERY MORNING at 6 am for a walk in the backyard. You may want to check out Col. Potter's New Owner information page

Re: A Terrier Question II
Thank you both for your follow up. I will read through the link you sent and also continue with tremendous patience as our little gal is certainly taking her time in getting the message! B.

Re: A Terrier Question II
Barbara: Some new owners leash the dog to them for the first couple of weeks so that they can catch them immediately and take them outside before they actually go. This reinforces what they are supposed to do pretty fast as they never get to "finish" the job so to speak. When she does go outside, give her lots of good girls, claps, get excited, and always a treat. She just needs to learn what you want her to do.

Re: A Terrier Question II
Yes! What she said: praise praise praise! Treat treat treat! You may have to play "let's make a deal!" Say "If you go outside and do potty I will give you some ice cream!" This does not always work however, if she feels like being particularly stubborn! It may work for other training aspects. Terriers are very food motivated.
