Help Me to be Patient
I recently filled out an adoption application online at Col Potter Cairn rescue. I was a little sad to hear that due to the large # of apps and the small dedicated group of voluteers, my app is on hold for 90 days...yikes! I see all the sweet faces that need forever homes and I just don't know how to be patient.

Re: Help Me to be Patient
Hi, Maureen, that would be very hard...especially seeing their little furry faces, and waiting. Can you tell us more about the pup that you are adopting? cheers, Robyn

Re: Help Me to be Patient
His name is Beathan, a one yr old cairn currently being fostered in CT. You can check him out at http://www.cairnrescue.com/ and look at available cairns here in the states. I do know that by the time my application is processed lil' Beathan will be in a forever home. I just want a buddy for Gracie and would love to rescue a cairn.

patience is tough
especially when you see all those beautiful faces! I would take every one of them if I could. But patience will pay off - let me tell you how i came to be owned by my sweet and devilish little Mia.
Last year, the local shelter had a 2 yr old male cairn that I wanted to adopt, but the city deemed him to be aggressive and put him down the day I went to fill out the adoption request. I was heartbroken. Then I went to meet with a breeder who had a bitch coming into heat, only she never got pregnant with pups. So I was back to square one and never seeing any rescues within a 5 hour drive (I didn't think then that people would be kind enough to volunteer to meet me part way with a rescue). But one night I happened to be visiting my hometown and my mother mentioned seeing an ad for a cairn. I called - they had just what I wanted, a black brindle female (just like one I had as a child). I said put a hold sticker on her, I will be there first thing in the morning. Of course, I got lost on my way there and it took me almost 5 hours to find my way (and only 2 to get home). The breeder told me as he gave me directions on the cell phone, that this little girl was worth the wait and worth getting lost over.
He was right. And I'm glad I found some patience to let the right dog find its way to me. She isn't a pet, she is family and I don't know what I ever did before she came into my life. She has a lot of the behaviors my mother's yorkie had that no other dog of the family ever had - that dog went over the rainbow bridge about a year and a half before I got Mia. Because of that, I think there is a higher power out there that led my mother to that little ad in the paper and led me down a whole bunch of strange country roads to Mia. for me, it was like finding true love, and very much worth the wait.

Hang in there, Maureen, it took us a long time to find Max, we rescued him as an adult from our local shelter. I know its hard, but Col. Potter seems like a great organization, you'll find a friend for Gracie when the time is right. xxxMarianne and Maxxx

Re: Help Me to be Patient
Maureen, rescuing takes time and sometimes breaks your heart when you don't get the little one that you applied for. Hang in there, we did and then we got Katie. We love her so much. I guess that she was the one that was meant to come into our lives. We were trying to get a Westie then we broadened her search to either a Weswtie or a Cairn and when that didn't happened we rescued a Yorkie ( a big Yorkie ).

Re: Help Me to be Patient
Maureen, I feel for you. When I was waiting to rescue my second Westie, every day seemed like a year! I had checked out several pups but they were always gone before I could get one. Then along came Roo, who was rescued by our Georgia from a kill shelter in Arkansas. He was not even a year old. The second I saw his picture I fell in love with him, but I thought that there was no way that someone from NY state was going to be able to get this boy. But it was meant to be -- this time all obstacles just fell away and before I knew it, I was on a plane to pick him up at the Nashville, TN airport.
It's funny how some memories fade, but this particular day is so vivid in my mind -- getting up before dawn to drive to the airport, the connecting flight, waiting for him to arrive with Georgia, the incredible afternoon thunderstorm that rocked the airport, and then finally seeing him and holding him in my arms, only to be smothered by Roo kisses!
By the time we arrived at the Albany airport that evening he was solidly my little boy!!! Driving home with him that night, he just hopped up on the pillow in the seat next to me as if he'd been mine forever.
Believe me, when it's time and it's meant to be, it will happen for you and Gracie! Don't be discouraged -- and we'll all be pulling for you! Good luck!

Re: Help Me to be Patient
Hang in there, as there may be many applications for the one who caught your eye and he/she may already have a home lined up.
I have volunteered with Col. P in the periphery for years and there are always more at the door. It is amazing that the flood gates never stop with cairns needing homes. I hope you get the cairn you want but there are no guarantees, except there are always more cairns in the wings who also need homes. Good luck, Darlene and Jolly, FL

Re: Help Me to be Patient
Don't worry. The right pup will come along for you. I imagine there are so many pups right now needing to get into foster homes that the main focus may be on that. The ones in the foster homes are safe, but they are trying to save as many as they can from the puppy mills. I am sure you will have your opportunity. They try to get the best match for each dog too so hopefully their new home will be their always, forever home. So, I think that if a dog you want goes to another family, it may just be a better match or they had an application in first. Good luck!! I know you will have a new pup before you know it. We were approved by Colonel Potters after doing the homecheck. Skylar came available locally and Georgia's rescue organization had her. So, I think that was meant to be.

Re: Help Me to be Patient
Maureen I can feel for you.. this is why we beg for volunteers.. we are limited by how many folks CAN make the calls... and the times they can make them... and we do go on vacations too....
There are more jobs than fostering in rescue.. if you are someone who can make calls you can help us by moving these applications along... if a dog spends LESS time in a foster home.. that home can take in more dogs in a year..
if anyone would like to help, please go here and sign up http://www.cairnrescue.com/rescue/volunteer.htm
we can use them for many reasons.. I'm doing an 8 hr transport on Saturday.. because we dont have folk nearby to help. corinne

Re: Help Me to be Patient
Try Cairn Rescue USA. We are extremely under-staffed but do not have a hold on processing applications. We have no volunteers at all in CT, however, hence we have no dogs there (not sure if that is where you live or if you just happen to like the particular dog listed there), but a land transport can be arranged from MD to NJ and then the applicant can pick up the dog in NJ (Princeton area). Not sure if that is too far for you. If you want a younger dog, you should apply even if you don't see one. By the time we get a pup, we usually give them to applicants that have applied earlier, so the dog gets listed with a Matched next to it. We have 3 coming in, but I'm not sure if they will go to MD or KY. It all depends on what happens with the transport.

Re: Help Me to be Patient
And, Angie, I am driving from eastern PA to Des Moines in July, could easily run down to MO on my way back east and pick up a pup - I will have my dogs, birds and rats with me, but there will be room for 3 more westie/cairn size crates in the van.

Re: Help Me to be Patient
Maureen...
I think you should try another avenue ...I agree with Angie and Tara....
They wonder why they can't find foster homes... well cause they don't move dogs... 90 days!! Hell it takes that long to look at a good application? I could file through TONS of applications it that amount of time... RULES RULES RULES... those poor dogs... Rescuing them like crazy and placing them is like being on a slow boat to china...
I wish you the best... and like Trixie... they all sit forever in foster care for months and they need a forever home.
I do wish you the very best!!!!
I bet you will make a fabulous home for whatever lucky Rescue you get...
I couldn't hold my fingers off he keys any longer...

Re: Help Me to be Patient
Well..in May we had 17 dogs come in.. and 28 go out.. so that would have been helpful.. but the June dog dumping has been atrocious.. we took in over 40 dogs....
Sorry you are too cowardly to sign your name, but we do take seriously moving the dogs out. BUT since these dogs have already had one bad situtation.. they need only the best. The rules are for the safety of the dogs, not for peoples convenience.
i am sorry for delays in processing applications.. or home visits etc.. but we really do have jobs and lives that we need to live as well.. and the volume of applications is very high. corinne

Re: Help Me to be Patient
The Cairn Rescue League also has dogs that have been in foster care for a long time, but it's not because of no time to go through applications, it's from LACK of applications!
Please feel free to take a look at our available dogs - http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NH75.html (there are also some that aren't on Petfinder yet for one reason or another) - and submit an application if you see one you're interested in - http://www.cairnrescueleague.com/adoption/application.html.
Since I'm the one who processes applications, I can promise a fairly quick response.

Re: Help Me to be Patient
I am a member of Col. Potter and also a Communications Coordinator. We are all volunteers and do our best to find the very best home for the dogs. We may get an application to do and may, just may be able to get it done in 2 or 3 days and it is then forwarded on to the Home Inspection Team. Some take a good deal longer. Each reference is called and spoken to. Col. Potter has a very high success rate in placing their dogs. This is due to the 5 (I believe that is the #) step process to be sure that the right dog goes to the right family. We are working as hard as possible to process our applications. Please hang in there, as I know Col. Potter will find the right dog for your home. Pat Zip & Joey's Mom
