Cairn Mix to be PTS in ND
Hi Everyone. We're doing a courtesy listing (on Petfinder) for an owner in North Dakota who has a 10 yo cairn mix that needs to be rehomed outside North Dakota or it will be PTS. This area is completely dead territory for us (CRUSA) and since the dog has very little time (until Aug 17 or Aug 22nd at most) we thought we should cross-post him to see if someone else can help him out. The owner is willing to drive up to 500 miles. The dog needs grooming and needs to be altered and be brought UTD. He is UTD on rabies only.

Poor Smokey, sounds like a bum rap to me... I hope you are able to help his owner get Smokey rehomed, sorry I can't be of any help.
I was just thinking, If the 'lady' was bending to pet him, then why didn't he go for her hand?? Sounds like maybe she was trying to give him the boot!!! This does not make sense to me. Bloody politics Grrrr

I emailed Smokey's owner last night to see if I can help, but I haven't heard back yet. They're in the far SE corner of ND, right near the border with MN, so that might make it easier to get him out of there. I wonder if he could be shipped to a foster home by air. They're not too far from Fargo.

The owner (Cara) can also be contacted at home by phone at
701-642-6552.
We normally do not give out phone numbers, but this dog does not have much time left. Intakes can also share the Owner Surrender upon request if it will help save Smokey. Requests should be sent to info@cairnrescueusa.com . The owner says that she has had Smokey since he was 6 months old.

I wasn't able to find a foster home for Smokey, but I understand he's going to a rescue in Sioux City, IA, if nothing else works out for him. I did have a long conversation with his owner, and his mother was a cairn and his father was a wire-haired fox terrier.
The story was a little confusing. Apparently, the bite occurred on July 18. Smokey went through 10 days quarantine at home, then he was brought back to the vet for a rabies shot. I talked to both vets that saw him, and he acted aggressively toward both of them. They seemed surprised that he was in danger of being put down for only one bite, despite the fact that his owner says the city has a no tolerance policy. The vets did say that the whole case was quite controversial, but weren't more specific.
Apparently, Smokey can react aggressively if you touch the right side of his head, and he's also sensitive around his tail, but his owner says he's fine with family members and people who visit the house. I do wonder how he'll adjust to change though. I hope things work out for him.

Thanks katie , I am glad someone found its way out to ND to help him as you know its so hard when you have no one out that way. Foster homes are the key so anybody reading this would like to help CRUSA or Katie's CL Please go to our websits and sign up and we can both keep more cairns from falling through the cracks
