Jazz's history Vote for this post

I was asked to write down everything that has happened with Jazz. Monday afternoon we were in the backyard playing soccer. She steals the ball and I chase her. We then had to get ready to leave for the evening and my husband went upstairs to change clothes. We left. When we came home I couldn't find Jazz, the lab was right there but not Jazz. I went looking for her and somehow she had gotten locked in the bedroom. Now, while we were gone there were big thunderstorms. When I went in there to go to bed I noticed she had thrown up everywhere including my bed. We figured she got nervous because of the thunderstorms. It was undigested food. She wasn't any better on Tuesday so I took her to the vet to check her out. He took some blood and found that her white blood count and ALT counts were high. He started her on an antinausea (reglan) and baytril(antibiotic) and sent me home with some canned dog food to try and get her to eat. No luck and she didn't drink either. Took her back in on Wednesday and he started her on an IV with baytril and reglan. We picked her up Wednesday night, he thought she would be okay at home for the night. I coaxed her to drink a little bit of water. Took her back on Thursday at 7:00 AM for my IV and medications. She stayed until 11:00 when I took her for her sonogram. Sonogram came back perfectly normal in fact Dr. said if you hadn't told me I was looking at a sick dog I wouldn't have known it from these. Took her back to the vet where he put her back on an IV for the afternoon. Took her home for the night and she drank water and ate a little bit of baby food. Now I had to force the food down her with a syringe. Went in Friday and he decided to try her on a special diet food after giving her an injection of baytril and reglan. We took her home Friday and tried to feed her. The first two she kept down after that she threw everything up. Went in the morning and they put her back on an iv and drew blood. Now all of her liver enzymes are high with ALT still being so high it's not readable. Her kidney bun and creatine are now high and she has developed a heart murmur. We are leaving her at the emergency clinic where they now have her on baytril, amoxicillin, reglan and amexate. That's it for now.

When my Sparky's been terrorised by thunder in the past she's pulled up the edge of a rug or carpet and tried to eat it. Also when Rio was ill once she did that too. Have you checked whether she could have eaten something similar that could be stuck inside her....that wouldn't show up.

Have you mentioned a pancreatic issue to the vet ? If that's her problem then her liver gets upset too and the smell of food which they're trying to get you to force down her will make her worse.
I had to promise the vet the first 2 nights Sparky was allowed home that I ate nothing or cooked nothing near her. I couldn't let Rio near her after she'd just eaten either, as the smell alone would get the juices/acids in her pancreas stirred up and make her sick once again.
She was kept in isolation at the doggie hospital well away from where they prepared food and fed the other animals too.

Three random thoughts, and praying like heck for little Jazz -

I'm sure you've gone over this with the vet, but could she have gotten into ANYTHING in the yard. Had you had your yard treated recently?

Did you notice ANYTHING different in your bedroom. Anything chewed, anything missing?

PLEASE ask the vet if the Baytril could be making things worse. Some dogs have difficulty tolerating Baytril.

PS - Don't forget the possibility of a Terrier Club fundraiser if it looks as if the bills might get out of hand.

Do a google search for dogs + Baytril + "adverse reactions".

PS - Where are you located?

We live in Round Rock, Texas. We have looked an pancreas issues and that doesn't seem to be the problem. We have looked all around our bedroom and don't see anything and we don't take any medications (birth control and I'm not missing any). We haven't treated the yard all summer. We just keep looking. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Cindi, I've forwarded your email to Barbara Ott, who does westie rescue and also lives in Round Rock. I thought she might know of something local (plant, insect,...) that might have caused this, or that she might know of some sort of veterinary resource, altho I can't think of anything to do that you haven't already done. I'll let you know if I hear back from Barbara.

Cindi, Barb Ott's guess would be acute pancreatitis, altho that's usually helped with IV fluids and antibiotics, which Jazz is already getting.

She also wonders if Jazz may have eaten a poisonous toad. She says they're rare in your area, but she has heard of it. Or a rattlesnake bite, altho I would think the vet would be able to tell that. She says there are rattlesnakes in the Round Rock area, and if you live in a newly developed area, that could be a possibility. Or a scorpion, which is also present in your area. And even though you don't use any chemicals on your yard, Barb says there have been strong storms in your area recently, so she wonders if something might have washed into your yard from a neighbor's yard.

Barb does say that the emergency clinic in Round Rock is excellent, so Jazz is in good hands.

Barb says she'll be happy to talk to you if you want, so I'll send you her contact information off-list.

Lynda, I thought Katie did a wonderful job, too. It is so amazing how people care for each others pups.

Cindi, I just read your afternoon post and I'm so sorry to hear things are not going well for Jazz.

Thank you for posting her history, you've had some good suggestions here and it really does sound to me like some kind of poisoning... I had thought of the toads as well. I've had company all day and just getting on line now, so will do some research.

Hope Jazz makes a quick recovery, we are all keeping her in our prayers.

I also question if anyone in your neighborhood had chem lawn services..regardless of how "safe" they say it is...my sil broke out with a terrible rash this spring after a neighbor had service and just now is getting relief with some steriod treatment.
Do you think it is possible?
Lawn chemical do stay in the ground a very long time.
Had Jazz shown any allergic sensitivites in the past..esp. enviromental?
Hugs,
Nancy :)

A friend of ours dog got a poisened peanut that some idiot had put out to kill the squirrels. (guessing a squirrel brought it into their yard and dropped it) There are some real crazies in this world. I just hope they figure out something soon...

I know this sounds weird, but could she have somehow swallowed a small button battery, such as those used in watches and such? i know you said you didn't notice anything missing, but check for something like that. I understand they can cause great havoc. Just wracking my brain.
And saying my prayers for her, too.

Forgot to add -- I have printed this out and will get it to my future daughter-in-law. She's not an expert -- she's studying for her vet tech's license -- but the more eyes that see it the better. She also works for a local vet -- maybe she can run this past him....
