Kidney Stones - Food? Vote for this post

Gabbie, my 4 year old Westie had to have kidney stone surgery 6 months ago. At that time the vet changed her food to Hill’s Science Diet c/d, and said she would need to be on this diet from now on as a preventative for future kidney stones. (Previously I was feeding Gabbie flint river ranch). The main ingredient in Hill’s c/d is corn – which has created an entirely new set of problems. She is now itching uncontrollable; she has red inflamed spots on her legs, paws, under her tail and in her ears. The itching has become unbearable for her, so much that I will be taking her to the vet tomorrow for some type of relief. My question to all of you, have any of your babies had kidney stone trouble, and if so what food did you have good results with, one that did not cause such skin irritation? I know that Westies are known for their potential skin problems, so I hope that some of you might be able to offer some advice – thanks so much!

Kathy, they do have Prescription Diet for kidney stones from the vet. Since it's made by Hill's also, I don't know if you are talking about it. Mine has to be on a bladder stone preventative diet by Prescription and she's doing quite well. About the itching - perhaps a short course in steroids might help? Don't let that scare you - taken only for a couple of weeks, they really do more good than bad.

Good luck.

Our Schnauzer had bladder and kidney stones removed at the age of three years..I fed her kibble called Avoderm.. she also had skin problems. But mostly to prevent the return of the stones I gave her 600 mg's Vitamin C every day for the rest of her life. It acidifys the urinary tract and prevents stones from forming. She lived to be 14 years old and never had another stone. The vet that reccomended this was an old man, it was before all these fancy prescription diets. It worked!

Nice one, Betty...that's what I'd be doing if she was mine then. Putting her back on her other food and giving her the vitamin C.

That's no good if it's causing such horrendous itchies. I'd stop it straightaway and tell the vet you need an alternative and fast !!

That prescription dog food at the vets, he makes commision on it...helps to bring in extra income.
Science Diet has been nick named Science Death on several of the nutritional message boards I am on.
K9Nutrition I would recommend that you check out. It is a yahoo message board.
Hope you can get your little one over the itchies before it is too late.
Corn is terrible to feed these terriers.
Hugs,
Nancy :)
