Mack's skin changing from pink to Vote for this post

black.

It does this at the start of every spring. I just wondered if anyone knew how I could stop this.

I assume that it is due to his long standing skin problem but wondered what your thoughts on this are.

thanks

Gilly xx

I always thought darker skin was a sign of maturity although in the case of ears, pink skin will burn in the sun so could be a 'built in' sun block!

With the Girlies, I have noticed their skin darkens when they apend time in the sun. When they are laying out in the sun we call in tanning, because their skin does get darker then, It's funny because where their collar goes is still pink.

Don't panic, Gilly. The Minkies' skin is usually black but gets even blacker in the warmer weather. And the vet tells me their skin is surprisingly healthy.

Oh I wish we had that problem. Mulli's is so red he just looks pink all over! He has licked his groin raw and is not on steriods. Maybe Mack is growing out of his bad skin problems...

The same thing is happening to Fancy right now. Her skin doesn't seem irritated, so my best guess is that it comes from laying out in the sun.

A westies skin is supposed to be black. Some go pink in the winter, and its called winter nose/skin. It can be stopped going pink in the winter by adding Kelp to the dog's food.

Most people think that westies are cuter and should have pink skin.. but really by standard the black is more appropriate. It really has a purpose too.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Here is a picture of Moly(aka Morgan) and Wisnton, while they aren't in show groom, they had been stripped in the neck and shoulder area and I think it shows how dark their skin is underneath. With the light that bright you can see its not a shadow but black pigment underneath that give the coat a slight grey tint, in areas that are stripped or clipped thin that can happen if the skin pigment is black.
I know of some judges who look for that grey tint and will fault the dog if it doesn't have it.
Also look at their ears.. see how black the pigment is...

Here is Sam as a pup... about five months... You can see that her ears are dark... she was born with the black pigment from day one like Morgan... but I think Sam may have had even darker pigment as a newborn. You can see that under her eyes and on the cheeks,..minus the dirt... there is a grey tint that isn't from being dirty.. Sam's skin is so black that even in full coat she can appear greyish from a distance.

One last photo.. Here is Sam now,.. she still has some thin areas because of her spaying and having been shaved.. and the hair is still growing back in.. so I shot this of her skin..
