Switching foods Vote for this post

Our rescue group has this little puppy 8 1/2 weeks old. She has had to be formula raised and we can't get this little girl to start switching from formula to can or dry kibble. She is very stubborn about it.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Have you started mixing the formula with canned food yet. Mostly formula at first with a little bit of canned and gradually increasing till canned. This is how I've always gotten puppies and kittens to eat regular food.

They have tried mixing the formula with other food. She just laps the formula up and leave the food.

We always went from Mommy or formula to baby rice cereal mixed with evaporated milk..soupy at first, then thicker, then adding puppy kibble, then mostly kibble, then puppy dog food with a tablespoon of canned and a little water to just dry dog food with the canned dog food...is she lapping the formula or being bottle fed? If bottle fed then she may just feel strange not being held. Sometimes we would put the food on our fingers and get them to lick it off and sometimes they don't like the consistency of the food and it takes them longer to wean onto regular puppy food.

We had one litter that when you held them, they needed to feel newspaper under them or they would cry..we called them our backwards litter..they were actually about two - three weeks behind other puppies their age. Eventually everything worked out, it just took us longer with this particular litter and we didn't let them leave until they were 13 weeks old and were secure with themselves.

When my Westie Ayla had a litter she could not feed them and the vet first gave them puppy formula and then had me give them baby rice cereal with milk, then baby food, and we then introduced the kibble by hand and then the canned food with the kibble.

What I would do, and I'm sure you have tried this already, I would take a tiny bit of canned food, mix it well with the formula, and only give her a small bit to start. Then more if she eats it. They do like licking it off your finger too. They get spoiled very early don't they?
Good luck!
