underweight
I have a 7-9 yr old puppymill rescue that I am nursing back to health....although he is doing good, eating like a little pig and bowels are now functioning normally....I can't seem to put any weight on the little guy....he weighs in at 14 lbs 4 ozs. I'm leary to make and feed satin balls as it has been suggested...I don't feed my westies any wheat or corn. I'm open to suggestions!

Re: underweight
I don't have any experience with puppy mill rescues, but I'm sure there are others on the board who can help. Good luck.

Re: underweight
I can tell you what puts weight on my Girlies..I have to watch really carefully when I home cook for them. They love chicken and rice' or beef and rice and will eat all I give them. I mix it with their kibble. You might try something like that to improve his appetite. xxxxBetty and the Girlies...

Benny gets 1 cup of Canidae chicken/rice for breakfast with a 100 UI Vitamin E, Fish Oil capsule and Nupro-Joint Support formula (loaded with vitamins and minerals)and at supper he gets chicken or ground beef or fish and either rice or potatoes, vegetables, sometimes boiled eggs, cottage cheese or yogurt/fresh fruit

Re: underweight
He may just simply be a smaller westie! My fosters have all varied in size/weight. When we fostered Nessie's dad, he was even a bit lighter weight than Nessie.

Re: underweight
That could be his final weight. Our first Westie, though she was female, only weighed 14lbs her whole life.

Re: underweight
Nothing said that they have to be big hulking Monsters like Sis at almost 22lbs. Some are smaller than others, if it is healthy and eating normally and pooping normally the weight will eventually go up. Just remember overweight can cause many problems also.

Re: underweight
I have a puppy mill rescue LWD that is also very small. She only weighs 11 pounds. I've had her now for two months, and she was in foster care for two months prior to that. She eats twice a day and will easily out eat my 20 lb. male Westie. She finishes up anything he leaves and she will eat ANYTHING, like lettuce, tomatos, cabbage and potato skins. I don't feed either dog any wheat or corn because my male Westie has allergies.
In spite of this, she hasn't gained any additional weight, so I believe she's just not supposed to be any heavier. It could be that your pup is just a smaller variety like this, too.
Heidi
PS - What are satin balls?

Re: underweight
I've been told that dog owners use this recipe at show time and for weight gain on their dogs....Google "satin balls" and you will find many recipes but most have cereal in them and we steer away from grains, especially wheat and corn.

Re: underweight
I don't do many grains, either, especially not wheat. I'll stick with what I'm using now. Thanks!
