Skin Care Regime for Dogs with Skin Problems Skin problems in dogs Malassezia Dermatitis
Here is a Westie rescue site that has information and a phone number to call Westie Rescue Houston
I have read the following:
antibiotics will make the yeast problem worse. Yeast can be treated with ketoconazole( antifungal) and malaseb shampoo and giving a Probiotic Acidophilus capsule every day.
Food: A dog with yeast needs to be on a low carbohydrate diet natural balance venison and sweet potato dry dog food is OK
only give fresh or frozen meat or veggies as treats
Raw diets are the best way to help those dogs with ongoing skin problems, but it's a commitment. You can search the K9Nutrition list archives for information regarding feeding raw, other food alternatives, and help with skin allergies. You can search the archives at Onibasu.com. Enter the word(s) to search for and check the box for "K9Nutrition", then click on Search.
If you have a baby onesie to put on him/her, (backwards so the tail is through the crotch) it should prevent him/her from pulling his/her fur out.

Re: Info for skin problems
You're welcome. Col. Potter has a wealth of information on their home page and their blogs. It's probably not something people would think of to look for on a rescue website but they're incredibly knowledgeable and I don't think there's anything they haven't dealt with. I hope you can help Robbie!

Re: Info for skin problems
I find that it is important to understand what heating system people have in their homes and how it affects their Westie or Cairn. Oil heat is dry even with a humidifier. Gas heat is better but still dry and a humidifier is needed to keep moisture in the air. Westies in particular have oily skin which protects them and it is my understanding and practice that not bathing a westie is best to keep the oils from drying out in the winter time. Keto-chlor shampoo is perscription but it does a great job on the areas of feet and tummy that have been affected by the rainy year. Gold Bond medicated powder has been recommended by a dermatologist with great success for licking foot issues. Check between toes for growths and talk to your vet regarding the use of Batril for any skin growths. Die hard Westie owners never bathe their dogs but use "corn starch" for the hair when it becomes dirty. Keeping the ears clean is really important and your vet will probably have something he sells right at his office that is better than the pet store. Diet is probably the hardest to keep control of as we humans feel we just "have" to give a treat to our dog. But look at the thousands of dollars saved in veterinary bills and not to mention misery poor poochie ends up with in allergies. So we can't control everything but we can control the food. I researched food and found that Fish and Potatoe perscription vet food works extremely well. And just give poochie a nylabone or something to chew on. Now if I can just get those teeth done by myself I will be thrilled! JMO

Some new info :
for itches bath with Malaseb
Look for a shampoo containing Ketaconazole, which is antifungal and antimicrobial. it seems to be somewhat controversial though so ask your vet before using it.
Ask your vet about topical sprays containing cortisone and an antibiotic

Re: Info for skin problems
Just adding somethiong most already know. I fostered a Westie that had Malassezia, poor baby had lost a lot of hair. I learned a lot about skins problems while I fostered him. The first thing I found out was to not feed him any Night veggies, (grown under ground). Night foods turn to startches and sugar, the vet said to just think of this feeding the yeast problem. He got a lot of steamed fresh veggies, shampooed twice a week to start with Malaseb shampoo and products. He is now a beautiful Westie with lots of hair.
