Chasing Cars
My 6 month old Cairn Fergus developed a new behavior yesterday - chasing and barking after cars at the end of his lead - anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

Sorry, I had the opposite problem - Caesar would get scared and freeze every time a car went by. Hope someone else who can help sees your post and answers soon. Maybe repost in the general forum- seems like most of the people just visit there. Sounds like your Cairn must be all terrier if he thinks he can take on a car!

Wesley used to do this too when he was younger to delivery trucks. We would hear them coming and shorten up on the leash. When he started to lunge, we would give a quick little tug and say "no". When he stopped we would praise him. It was slow going, but now he is okay.
I took a training class with Molly several months ago and asked for advice on Molly barking and going beserk when she saw other dogs coming. The trainer suggested a spray bottle with a 1/10th solution of vinegar and spray her when she barks. But also try to get her to do something for me positive so that I can praise her. Like ask her to sit, or heal & when she does I give her a treat and say "good sit - good girl". It has taken a long time and sometimes she still barks at other dogs, but sometimes she sees a dog coming and will just sit and look at me for her treat!!! Pretty cute.
I would be interested in hearing what others say! ?

We have the same problem with Layla wanting to lunge at passing "trucks". Because we live in nowhereland - she hasn't been accustomed to traffic - however, when walking with her I shorten up on the leash and tell her to "stay" and over time, she has lessened her instinct to try to chase a truck. I just thing it's consistency and patience on your part to continue to do the same things and Fergus will eventually "get it." The fact that he is still extremely young may take time. Layla is now 20 months old and will still, on the odd occasion, try it but this has lessened as I continue with her training. They certainly have a mind of their own and you think your training will never catch on but they do understand - they just simply want to ignore you - and that is where being the "alpha" on your part comes into play. Sit by the side of roads where its safe or walk and keep Fergus on his lead and just always make him sit and stay calm with the vehicles,Sometimes Collies are a bit inclined to chase cars etc but when we had Emma our Collie as a puppy Lucky we used to get her to stay and sit along the long farm drive as Vehicles came up and down to the farm feed shop..she does not chase cars now,Nimby the Cairn is a terroer if she sees Tractors or heavy machinery go along the drive...I really have to keep her by me..we did not get Nimby till she was 4 yrs.Stay safe.
