Hand stripping
Hi guys,
I'm Cherie, aka Boq's mom! We really love having him and he is my first terrier. I've fostered others but only for a week or two. They always got adopted pretty quickly. As a former vet tech and dog trainer I know the terrier breeds can be a bit spazzy and difficult at times. I'm sure I'll have loads of questions.
I am interested in hand stripping Boq instead of clipping him. Has anyone had experience with this? I know the general concept, and have worked with adults. What is the best age to start with a puppy?
I'm hoping my boy and I have a long time together and the vet seems optimistic about his heart!

Hi Cherie--I have to say that your Boq is precious! I've had 2 Westies and always had them clipped. Our groomer told us that stripping was more for Cairns than Westies--maybe I misunderstood?

Maybe so. I really enjoy the wiry texture though.... I've heard of others doing it but not sure yet with him. He is so cute and fluffy right now! He has started losing some fluff at the base of his tail. The coat under is h ard, wiry, but gorgeous! It hasn't covered his whole body yet though.

Hi Cherie
I have a couple of adults, ages 13.5 and 5, and a 9 month old pup. I'm planning to show the pup, so I started working on his coat as soon as the first puppy coat started to blow. You can strip the hairs that get long and stick out as soon as they get that way. What I have learned is that if you let it go until the puppy starts to get its adult coat it can take a year to get a good hard coat going. Also, it's better for the pup to toughen up the skin when they are young. A stripped coat stays much cleaner than a soft one, and doesn't get knots much at all as well.
See if you can find someone to help you the first few times, to get the pattern set. I learned from someone who did the left side while I watched, and then I did the right side to match. After which, she fixed what I had done. It takes a little bit, but once you get the hang of it it's just like knitting.
