Hot Spots Vote for this post

My Brodie, who is now 6, didn't develop skin problems until around age 2. It began as seasonal allergies, mainly to grass, we think and bothered her in the summer only. Well, now she's got this itchy patch on her lower back, near her tail. It's pink and she's either chewed or rubbed the skin bald..I've actually seen tufts of hair on the floor. I'm putting Benadryl cream on it, and giving her Benadryl caplets. I will take her to the vet to see what he thinks but am afraid we'll get the "steroid" answer once again. Does anyone have experience in dealing with hot spots? She is on a lamb & rice food and gets a skin supplement daily (we just started the supplements). Thanks for any help you can provide.

she may have developed an allergy to lamb and rice. the dermatologist we took olive to said they can develope an allergy to the food they eat. i would ask your vet to give you a shampoo for her that contains cortizone in it.

Our Beege used to get them on a regular basis. I tryed until I figured what was causing them, and since I stopped that she has been good, about a year now. What I did when I saw one coming, I washed it with peroxide and applied Bag Balm. That helps keep the hotspot from breaking. The Benedryl caplet is good as is the ointment.
Are you sure she hasn't picked up a flea? They will cause intense itching and hair pulling. One can set it all in motion.
It will take the skin supplement a few weeks to kick in and it does help over all.
Oh Beege was allergic to the wheat gluten in Greenies.

Although I didn't see any fleas, I did put Frontline on her this morning, just in case. I will also try the Bag Balm....thanks for the help!

Sounds like a flea-bite has aggravated her....that's the place they usually start pulling their hair from.

don't know if you are still checking messages on this, but Bonnie now has hot spots. She is 6 and never had them before. It came on fast and intense. She is on her second dose of steroid and antibiotic. Nothing in her diet changed. maybe she got allergic to her food? The vet says she is seeing more than the normal amount recently. I am also washing with peroxide and trimmed away any fur. She has one on her rump (at first I thought she needed her anal glands extracted-something else she never needed). When that went away with the meds it came back again when we stopped and two new patches. One on her belly and one on her chest. It drives her and us crazy with the licking. No sign of fleas and Maggie has been fine. Hope the meds work this time once and for all.
