Cali's heat time really hard on her
my Cairn Cali(fornia) will be 2 in oct and this is her 3rd time of going in heat (still on the fence about maybe breeding her) but I first notice she starts acting strange, running around under foot but in a scared way... then for 3 or 4 days I have to try everything to get her to come out of her crate ( she's not locked in anymore she's perfectly potty trained) she just doesn't seem herself, she seems scared... anyone ever had any experience with this.. will it get easier on her or should I just have her spayed and give up hope of at least one litter out of her... she's the PERFECT dog other then this.. oh and occasional digging... any tips on helping her thru it.. or for reassurance... TYIA Leah

Re: Cali's heat time really hard on her
Leah, where did you get Cali? Does she come from a breeder who's a member of the Cairn Terrier Club of America? If so, is the breeder supportive of her being bred? If not, time to get her spayed!

She's very pretty. Sounds like maybe a phantom pregnancy.....my Sparky had them till she was spayed. It's quite sad-she just wanted to nest....I'd get her spayed. XXX.

Re: Cali's heat time really hard on her
My Lola is having her 3rd heat now and she is fine. Just a little moody. She does the digging thing in bed at night. I'm not going to breed her...I see too many unwanted dogs at the shelters. Maybe you should ask your vet about her behavior, it seems odd.

Re: Cali's heat time really hard on her
the pic is from when she was a puppy she's even more beautiful now... she woke me up today like she normally does.. ate all of her breakfast and went outside fine... she just had 3 or 4 days of weird behavior.. we bought her from a pet store.. and before EVERYONE starts yelling at me this was from a privately owned pet store my family has known since I was a child... sort of friends of the family... and Cali just took my heart the minute I saw her... I went into debt to get her cuz I knew she was the right dog for my family.. and she has been she's perfect... I thought letting her have a litter of pups (we have 4 families already asking if we are ever going to breed her) she's such a patient and loving dog I just didn't want to take away her option of having at least 1 baby ( and knowing me I'd probably KEEP every pup) I was just worried about this behavior and hoped someone would have insight from their own dogs. my GF is a vet so Cali is seen practically everyday by a vet.. she thinks it's just new and different for Cali. I was just hoping like the face rubbing if anyone else had dealt with this .. Thanks for the input.. Leah

I couldn't see this picture. It definitely sounds like a phantom as they last 4-5 days. XXX.

Re: Cali's heat time really hard on her
If you are not going to breed her, then have her spayed. It will reduce the risk of cancers. I wasn't sure when I first got Mia if I wanted to have her spayed as I'd read that allowing them to go through at least one heat cycle would make her more loving and nurturing. After talking to my vet at length, I made the decision to spay her at 7 months old. She is no less loving than the day I brought her home. All I have to do is tell her Mama wants a kiss and she's on my lap.

Since it is so stressful on her, I would probably have her spayed. Good luck on your decision!

Re: Cali's heat time really hard on her
I am only wondering outloud...perhaps the cycle is painful the first few days for Cali...much like cramps. It is obvious that she is not comfortable. But what is this about face rubbing? I didn't catch the question. My little girl (just spayed) had heat just the day we met her and she was very crabby and quiet. So perhaps it could be a "pain" issue that makes her fearful.

Re: Cali's heat time really hard on her
Have you thought about the stud dog you would use for breeding. What are the strenghs and weaknessess of your bitch and the stud. Do they both have common ancesters in their backgrounds. Will you be showing her to championship to make sure she is suitable for breeding?. Is the male a champion. Are you prepared to be a good mentor for puppies new owners. Are you prepared to be responsible for bringing puppies into world for their lifetime. Have you done all your homework on what it takes to be a responsible breeder? Benny
