peeing Vote for this post

My 8-month-old Westie has just begun peeing on people! He did it twice in the park recently on other dog owners. Is this normal? What should I do? Thanks for any help.

Unless he is neutered, it sounds like puberty to me!

The neutering question raises a good point. I got my Westie in France, where we are living for a few years for work, and here they don't neuter dogs as a matter of course. They think it's unnecessary surgery, especially for males. The vet says it's not necessary to neuter Westies because they're calmer than other breeds. Does anyone have an opinion on this? As an American, I just assumed I'd neuter my dog. Alfie is pretty well-behaved and getting better every day. Well, except for this peeing-on-people thing, which he hasn't repeated in a few days.

Most people here have their dogs neutered unless they plan to show or breed them, Linda. It usually puts a stop to the males peeing up things.

Linda, it prevents a lot of diseases later on in life. Prostate problems in boys for one, many more for girls. I read Lilibeth's article, but I still think it's better for health reasons to have them spayed or neutered.

As for peeing on people - what does your vet say? I have no idea.

Oh gosh I think it's very funny he's wee weeing on people. Our 3 male Golden Retrivers were never fixed and were always very healthy. I never saw them wee on anyone though. I'm cracking up...sorry. xoxo Danielle and Lola

This could be a sign of a highly motivated male that will continue to "mark" at his will anything and everything he desires without breaking that habit early on by showing the male dog this is not acceptable behavior, I think you will lose the fight on this one.
Best take a firm stance on it now, not later.
And if you choose to neuter your pet, why would you put it off until after the 4 yrs. spent in France? That puzzles me.

When I was walking my Siberian, Kashgar, a neighbor wanted to talk. Since Kashgar got bored waiting, he peed on the guy. And Kashi was neutered - he just wanted to go on his walk. I could have died.

Re: peeing Vote for this post Reply to this Message

Hi everyone. I wanted to update you on my earlier post about our 9-month-old Westie peeing on people. It lasted about a month and then stopped. We were quick to correct this behavior and since late October, he hasn't peed on anyone. The consensus among our dog-owning friends and our vet was that it was adolescence-related. But despite the advice posted here, we're leaning towards not neutering him because our vet in France, and another vet we spoke with in Norway, insisted there is no medical proof that failing to neuter can cause future health problems. He is a very well-trained dog now. Any opinions on this are very welcome. Thanks, Linda
