Potty Training Vote for this post

So Riley, my 5 month old Cairn, has done really well with potty training. He's known for awhile to go scratch/bark at the door when he needs to go out. The only problem is that he doesn't seem to be generalizing this behavior to the rest of the world. It's almost like he's potty trained in the room where he lives (I have a big dining room/family room combo thing in my condo), but not anywhere else. I started having him sleep with me, but twice he's jumped down off the bed and immediately squatted. Last night, at 2am, he even peed on my bed! (The good thing is that my allergy cover under my sheets stopped it, so it didn't get on the mattress) He also has accidents when he goes to stay at my parents' house. So I guess my question is, "How do I fix this?" Any tips/hints/thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am not sure how you should go about fixing this problem. Your living arrangements sound very similar to what mine were when we first got Wick. We basically kept him in our sights at ALL TIMES until he could fully be trusted to not wander off and have an accident. As for the peeing in bed, I would stop letting him sleep with you until he fully comprehends that he is not to go to the bathroom ANYWHERE in the house. He will eventually get it.

We have since moved into a new house and Wick has yet to go to the bathroom in there anywhere. But when we go away to visit my parents or someone else, he has no problem going in their house. I guess because it is not really HIS territory. We hope he learns soon!! :)

Riley actually just started sleeping with me, because I wanted to make sure he was totally potty trained first. So much for that, huh? =) He's never in my room except for the times he's slept there, so maybe he thinks it's different somehow than the room where he spends all his time. It's been awhile since he's had an accident in the main room, so we trust him in there...I was just hoping I'd be able to trust him in other places too! Hopefully he'll learn as he grows. Thanks for the comment!

I think once he realizes that ALL of the rooms are his domain, he'll stop with the random accidents. House training is definitely the worst part with having a pet! It seems like it will never end and it can be so frustrating. He will learn though. These pups are smarter than we think sometimes!!

Also, what do you use to clean up his accidents? I recommend Nature's Miracle if you are not already using it. It comes in a white bottle with red letters and you can find it in most pet stores. It completely eliminates the smell unlike other cleaners so it prevents the dog from going in the same spot over and over. Worked wonders for us!! :)

If you catch him in the act, try a very firm 'NO' and carry him outside immediately, don't play though, he needs to know why he is out there. If you don't catch him, show the spot to him, say 'is this yours?', 'NO' then outside.

Are you taking Riley outside just before you go to bed at night? No matter what the time is I always take the boys out for potty before bed.

Good luck with Riley, he'll get it in time LOL.

At 5 months he's still very young. I guess right now he can't hold on too long and realises too late he needs to be going. Just patience and perseverance I'd say. Good luck, Julieanne.

Thanks everyone. I do the "No" and take him outside. The weird part is the he seems totally potty trained in the main room, but not in my bedroom. When he's in the kennel he'll whine for me to take him out. He's also sleeping through the night, so I thought he'd be fine sleeping with me. But, I know we got really lucky with him catching on with most of the potty training as early as he did. I'll keep at it! =)

BTW, Wick doesn't happen to be short for Wicket, does it? My boyfriend wanted Riley's middle name to be Wicket, because he makes an ewok sound when he wants something. =)

No, his name is just Wick. Or Wickford if he's getting yelled at! :) We named him after a small town in Scotland called Wick. Since he is of Scottish descent like all of these terriers on here! :)

I feel your pain...I am housebreaking 1 year old Brodie who was a kennel dog. Its VERY hard to break them of the habit of going poop and pee whenever and wherever they feel like it. I use a belly band, use a hands free leash and keep him confined, but he has good days and bad days. Its really important to watch these guys like a hawk..also my first Cairn had relapses at about 9 months of age..he would poop on the green shag rug in the basement..we figured he thought it was grass..got rid of it and no more poops!
