Cutting Nails Vote for this post

I have been afraid to take on nail cutting for the past year, I always had the vet or went to a groomer just for nails and ear trim. But it was getting to be too much with two and we didnt have a pleasant experience last time. So today I got everything ready, including emergency kit for bleeding.

Duncan and Darby did great, a lot less trama than at the groomer or vet. Each one just laid back after brushing, and ear trimming and let me trim thier nails! What a relief.
We were all happy.

Terri

Well done !! You're braver than me. Sparky's nails are black and you can't see the quicks so I wouldn't even attempt it. Luckily they only need doing when the groomer comes !

Good for you! Just cut back a bit at a time on a regular basis and you will be fine. I do all four of mine, If I happen to cut too much, I dab on the cornstarch and keep going. They pick on your actions, if you act horrified so will they. I only have to do battle with one, the rest let me with no problem.

Try a dremmel - its even EASIER!! I actually pay to have someone cut them... but I will dremmel them. :) And my tummy spins as I do it... I'm that freaked out by their nails. LOL

Good for you Terri
I also use the dremel tool.
But I have found that I can clip some and then dremel making them even shorter and
still stay away from that blood line. The dremel acturally helps that nerve to retract and you can get shorter nails.
I just need to get on a schedule and do it more often.
Hugs,
Nancy :)

We are glad that the nail trimming went so well. That's one thing I haven't been able to bring myself to do. I clip my cats nails and the guinea pigs nails, but I'm afraid to do my pups nails. Luckily my groomer does a good job, so I let her take care of it. At one time I considered doing it myself, so I researched the Dremmel. It definitely sounded like a good method. I recommended it to my friend with a nervous Boston Terrier, and it has worked out very well for them.

Cheers,
Teresa, Dex and Fancy

I use the dremel once a week when I bath them and then I don't have to clip. I have them on a schdule Norman on Monday, Sydney on Tuesday, Oscar on Thursday and Madison on Thursday. It works great. Lana gets Friday right now.
