hip dyplasia in Westies?
Would anyone know if hip dysplasia is prevelent in Westies? I have often wondered if my vet was wrong when I first got Mister Beasley. He had sort of a "skip" in his running. He would lift his one leg up and sort of hop a bit. HE still does it two years later. He does not complain of discomfort and runs and does all the things a westie does outside and in. But alot I notice when jolly he lifts one leg up and kind of hops. Then puts it back down again. The vet took xrays when he was six months old and he does not seem concerned. What do you think? What alarms should I look for..Thank you!

Re: hip dyplasia in Westies?
I think that Westies are more prone to knee problems than they are to hip displasia, but I'm not a vet. I would get another opinion if it keeps occurring. Good luck!

Re: hip dyplasia in Westies?
It's a common Westie thing but it's not hip dysplacia....it's called Legges Perhes Disease, I believe....some have it operated on. Both Minkies have always had it and they "skip" too but my vet wouldn't operate unless they're in pain and they're not. Some use joint supplements as they can help. My vet calls it "clicky knees" !! XXX.

I didn't know dogs got perthes until my brother's jack russell had it. Kind of ironic because I know about perthes hip disease because my brother had it!

Re: hip dyplasia in Westies?
I'd have the Vet redo the x rays. I had a foster that showed no sign of it at 6 months and when we re-did the xrays at 10 months, it showed up. We did the surgery and the Westie is fine, has a great home and is a very happy boy. I understand that he is giving his new family quite a workout with the walkies!!!!

It also sounds like a possible luxating patella....very common in Westies. I would get another opinion.
