What is the best dog food to use?
Moshe is getting a little heavy and i use half regular dog food and half light. I would like to know if any of you know what is the best dog food to use for a Westie with no byproducts or anything artificial and where to buy it. Yoka & Moshe

Re: What is the best dog food to use?
Don't know how much by weight but I use a cup a day. I know what the trouble is my husband gives him too many treats. He gives him a chicken strip in the morning before he even eats. I told him 100 times don't do that but he does it every time. Moshe also has the now the habit to come to the kitchen when I am in there cooking. If I am eating he looks up at me and yes I am guilty too. I give him sometimes a piece of cheese or a piece of cooked chicken. He also gets a bone often that he can eat. I used to use Flint River Ranch dog food from Texas that is baked and all natural but after getting two bags in a row with half crumbs I did not order it again. Now I have been using a mix half of the science light and a mix with salmon in it , it was all natural too with no by products or corn. I forgot the brand. It is time to order again. Love Yoka XXX

If he's in the habit of getting a treat just break it into smaller pieces-as long as he gets something he will be happy. It all helps. XXX.

Yoka,
You may want to look at Lamaderm product. It's made in the US and looks to be a decent product. I have never used it myself, but it looks decent. Lynne

Re: What is the best dog food to use?
Yoka...I have just switched my girls over to Eagle Pack holistic select chicken and rice. I is all natural and they love it. They don't even need the Natural Balance chicken stew I was adding to their dry Natural Balance. I tried the lamb an rice, but it was a little rich for little Hattie. She has some "poopy" problems, and I add 1/8 tsp. of their holistic solution to her food, and she is doing much better. My girls eat twice a day.

Thanks so much. I will do a search and read about it. Moshe also eats just once a day .I leave the food out all day and he has left over nearly every day. I need to change his diet. Want him to be as healthy as can be and live as long as possible.

Re: What is the best dog food to use?
You might want to check out the Natural Balance while you're at it. One thing I noticed is the Eagle Pack has beet pulp in it. Could be a problem if your dog is prone to beard staining. Here is the Natural Balance site..I notice they have new treats we are going back to check the ingredients. The best way to control Moshe's weight is cut way down on the treats. My Girlies get green beans, cauliuflower, carrots and a couple of small chicken treats a day. They get two meals that total aprox 1 cup of food total a day. I sometimes cook chicken and rice or beef and rice for them, or a couple spoonsful of canned food. But that is included in the total. Another thing we swirch back and forth between flavors of the Natural Balance. We have used it more than four years with never a problem in quality or them eating it. I do buy the small 5 # bags so it is always fresh. Premium food goes rancid quicker once it's open, because it doesn't have those nasty preservetives. Check it out. xxxxBetty and the Girlies...

Re: Thanks Betty
Moshe has been on Natural Balance and he loves it. It is a very healthy dog food. Levi is used to lamb and rice so I am keeping him on Natural Choice the only thing I don't like about it is that he has a little beard stain and wonder is it from the food?. I checked all the ingredients and it is a good natural food. Maybe it is from his saliva ? He has the most beautiful coat you have seen. Hugs Yoka,Moshe & Levi

Re: What is the best dog food to use?
Mac gets a treat in the morning and a couple in the afternoon before dinner. I just cut back on the amount of regular food if he gets several treats. He eats Nutro Lamb and rice and his treats are those also. Cutting the amount of food has helped me keep his weight in check

Re: What is the best dog food to use?
We also use Natural Balance. Heidi has lamb and rice and Glen has the sensitive stomach formula. Both of mine get about 1 cup per day with about a tablespoon of moist food in it. I think dogs are just like people with weight because Heidi and Glen eat the same, get the same exercise and yet we always have to watch Heidi's weight, while Glen is still on the skinny side.

Re: What is the best dog food to use?
We use Natural Balance and are very pleased with it. You can cut down some on the amount of kibble you use and fill in with vegetables to help loose weight. Can use canned no salt stringbeans, I just rinse them with water and then add to the food. Pat - Zip & Joey & Sean's Mom

Re: What is the best dog food to use?
We have treating the rescues and our personal dogs for the last year - Kumpi. It has made an incredible difference and any grain that is in it - is processed completely different than commercial foods. Please visit the site and feel free to ask Evy anything you need to know about it. She's extremely helpful. I have four dogs and one large bag lasts about 6-8 weeks! :)
My 13 year old neice even noticed the difference and asked what was I feeding my dogs to get such great coats!! Now, if a kid notices - there is something to this food!

The only food Hannah's tummy can tolerate is Chicken and Vegetable Tuckertime from the Vets. Kelsi is currently on Science Diet Z/D Ultra canned food and they both eat Z/D Ultra dried food.

My 4 also eat Natural Balance, which I buy at Petco. They alternate between the reduced calorie, and the salmon and sweet potato. They go great on both kinds.

Re: Thanks you ,Thank you.
Thank you all for your wonderful information and tips. It looks the one that is used the most is Natural Balance. I will check it out and the others. Glad to know that someone else used Flint River Ranch and also had the gas problem . Moshe did the same so that one has been eliminated. Will start using more vegetables too and cut the chicken strip in half and also his cheese stick. I am already giving it less to him. Thanks again I really do appreciate it. Hugs Yoka & Moshe

Re: What is the best dog food to use?
Hey, guys... Frosty eats Innova (www.onlynaturalpet.com or you can likely find in a local store). It's wonderful!!! His coat is beautiful and we no longer experience the vomiting episodes that he was having on Nutro Natural Choice. Also, less poop in the yard. Innova is designed to supply highly digestible ingredients and uses all “fresh” ingredients from the 5 basic food groups. I thought it would be pricey, but it was around the same. I pay $21 for a 16.5 lb bag at a local store. It normally lasts Frosty about 2 1/2 months.
