Potty training Vote for this post

Shelby is 5 months old and is doing better.
I hate leaving her in the pen when I go to work, but for now I don't trust her not to leave me items of both kinds while I am gone.
I know this will take time, but any suggestions will help.

I do keep her out of the pen as much as I can when I am home and she does ok. She has accidents and I can't always catch her before she goes either pee or poop.

BUt I would welcome any ideas you have.
Doggie diapers not an option as she would rip them to shreds.

I am going to enroll her in puppy classes, hopefully this month and they have suggestions there too, I thought I would turn to you all first...
Thanks

Do you get home lunchtimes ? If not then I'd try and find someone like I did that could let them out during the day.

no Lynda and Kelsey would not let anyone in the house except my friends from Asheboro and they are at least 30 minutes away. I wouldn't ask them, esp. with the price of gas these days.

Re: Potty training Vote for this post Reply to this Message

Well, I'd expect a mess then, I think. I would with Shelby as she's young and now my two are older I expect it if I leave them longer that 5 hours a stint. What about a dogflap ?

Re: Potty training Vote for this post Reply to this Message

Mackinac has some accidents still... He is almost 10 months. but the wierdest thing he only has accidents when we run out for 2o minutes or so! We take him out just before we leave.... but he will still do something!! Kind of like he is mad at us for not taking him.... More so when we spend alot of time at home and then leave for a bit (not hours!) he leaves us a message! We still leave him in his Ex-Pen with toys and his blanket when we are at work and out and about.
Any ideas on that one??

Re: Potty training Vote for this post Reply to this Message

I have no problem whsn she messes in the pen. I don't expect her to wait till 4 PM or so for me toget home.

I think she does pretty good, but just need some ideas for in the house when I'm there.
I know she will get it in time. It is so different from kelsey as my Dad was around those first few months. Even after we moved she dii well except when I was home and she wanted to pee in the house, but that worked itself out. With no one being there during the day I know it will take longer..

Re: Potty training Vote for this post Reply to this Message

I am not much help in this department because Moshe has never done it in the house.
He did it the first two days in is crate when he was 8 weeks old at night only when we left him down stairs.
He used to scratch my wall or door and because I told him no,no he started to sit right in front of us and stare at us when he has to go. When he was a pup I closed the kitchen off with a gate that way when he would do something it was on tile but he never did anything. He drinks lots of water but someone is home most of the time here except for a few hours. I can leave him 6 hours at least. He is let out a lot.

Good luck.

Re: Potty training Vote for this post Reply to this Message

I'm not much help either. Clover is still tying to be potty trained. Since she was a mill release and used to going when she wanted to, it has been hard. She has been here 18 months and does pretty good but the other night it was raining and when she went out obviously she didn't go and when I picked her up to put her on the sofa in my lap, she peed all over me and the throw on the sofa. Boy was I mad at her and let her know it. Females for me have always been harder to train. Chip and Mulli don't do that...

Re: Potty training Vote for this post Reply to this Message

I think it's always harder to potty train when you have multiple dogs. My suggestion may not work because of them wanting to play with each other but here goes. Get a long lead or piece of rope and have her attached to you when she is out of her pen. The hardest part of potty training is not seeing them until right after they did something. A correction only works if you catch them in the act so to speak. If she's attached to you then you should be aware of it as it's happening so you can correct her and take her right out. That being said, I haven't been able to do that with Brutus because Camy tries to play with him. I would say just do the normal potty training things. Correct if you catch her in the act, praise and treat if she does it outside, work on a signal to go out (bells or something like that) and a really good cleaner like nature's miracle for the accidents.

Re: Potty training Vote for this post Reply to this Message

I think I was very lucky when we first got Keeley. She never went in her crate but I would get up at about 5:30 and take her out. We had to go out, she was only about 5 months old, she was left for about 8 hours and she never messed her crate.
The one thing that I would always do , was watch her. After she [played and chased the ball I always took her out. If she had been napping, as soon as she got up, she went out.
I think we are very lucky because her last trip out is at 8:30 and then she goes to bed and doesn't go out again until 6:30 in the morning. I always joke that she must have a bladder the size of Texas.

Re: Potty training Vote for this post Reply to this Message

mackinac does great in his nighty crate at night too. No accidents in there. Just when we leave him for a short while. He can hold it for 8 hours during the night.. but lave him for 30 mins to an hour and he lets you know he is upset with you!! We think he does it to be spiteful. (although people say dogs dont do that.......)

Re: Potty training Vote for this post Reply to this Message

you are the first to say that!!! We have heard over and over again that dogs are not spiteful.....but we think mac can be. More so when we have company and then leave shortly after... we come home to something yucky!! Even when we take him out before we leave! He is telling us he was not happy we left without him!! Oh yeah.... like that works!

We only ever used paper training with Maxwell and it worked perfectly I would pit paper near the back door and leave some contaminated there each time it worked well fo us but we were here during the day though

Re: Potty training Vote for this post Reply to this Message

Great subject! Statler is really great about not going in the house. He completely gets the idea of the puppy pads, which we only use occasionally as they like to chew them up if we aren't in the room with them!

Waldorf on the other hand is very stubborn when it comes to not peeing in the house. I take them out every 2 hrs or so during the day, and that generally seems to work. But if they're just in the kitchen (gates are up), he doesn't let you know he needs to go and just pees, even if you're sitting at the table or standing at the counter.

I have learned by watching Statler when he needs to go out - he has tell-tale signs that I've picked up on. Neither of them poop in the house, or in their crates which is great! And they go from 9:30 at night until whenever I take them out in the AM - anywhere from 6 to 8:30 AM. So really not too many complaints - just wish Waldorf would getting the hang of either the puppy pads or telling us.

We have also cut way back on their supper/evening water - which has definitely helped. They like to flip the water bowl, so most of the time the bowl isn't down either. I give them water and then take them out a short time later.

I was lucky when I housetrained the girls I lived right next door to work and I had a back room that opened into the fully fenced yard and even though I put down newspaper Hannah would follow Kelsi into the yard and going to the toilet. I could leave the door open all day.

I wish, but she does pretty good when I am here. Idon't always catch her till its to late.
when I have and made a sound she looks at me and keeps on.

Kelsey looks at her like this is not how its done. Then she looks at me like, I wasn't this way, was I . I told her tonight she wasn't only because Dad was here to help, even after we moved south.
