I don't think it's as much growing older as it it exposure to the sun. We always say the Girlies are tanning when they lay in the sun. BeeGee is a real sun lover, her skin has gotten very dark this year. It always goes back pink in the Winter.

I asked the Vet Allergy Specialist at OSU about Elliot's dark skin when he saw him and he said it was natural. Elliot has light skin in the winter and black in the summer.

Lambchop falls in to the sun-bather's too...he does have a nice dark tan in the summer and then fades to pink in the winter...Mackie just stays out of the sun :)

It is not unusual for westies to have black skin or their pink skin to turn black. sun exposure will make it darker. It will most likely pink up in the winter.

Kelsie's skin is pink with a few darker spots. Our Vet told us to be VERY careful about letting her in the sun for long. She said that dogs with light skin are prone to skin cancer so we have to be extra vigilant. She is always checking Kelsie's skin for any odd looking growths or discolorations
Has anyone else heard this advice from their Vet or is ours just being extra cautious?
