Re: Need Advice on Raw Food Diet
Hi, Karuna -
We don't do a raw food diet here, but I would imagine that if a raw diet is good for one breed, it is probably ok for another. But the types & sizes of food items could be different with smaller dogs like Westies... Whether it has any impact on dealing with Westie allergies etc., I don't know either. But a VERY good resource on feeding raw diets in general is THE WHOLE DOG JOURNAL, available online or mail subscription. They are very much into the holistic and positive approach to all things dog, and give lots of details and other resources about every topic they cover, including training, exercise, commercially available foods, medical problems, etc.. We highly recommend it to anyone. We've had a subscription since 2006.
We are blessed that our Westies don't have allergy issues - our friend has these problems, & has experimented with all kinds of dry foods with only limited success. But I don't think she has tried raw foods...
Blessings, linda (& charlie & mr. butters) -- PS: is your name of Slavic origin? (my grandparents were all from Slovakia)

Re: Need Advice on Raw Food Diet
I have a friend who feeds her dogs on raw food, and she knows a lot about it. I asked her and this was her reply:
Westies are the ONE breed I would be really cautious with bones as they are renowed for getting things stuck in their oesophagus!! I do think it would help the allergy but maybe better to go down the route of mince meat with the bone already ground down rather than whole bone.
Ian Billingshurst is a good book to start with.
I hope this is useful to you. I'd be interested to hear how you get on.
Kathy
