About a year ago my dear cairn Jasper was killed by a car because he pulled a flexi out of my hand and dashed after the oncoming vehicle. Ironically, I never let him off lead as I knew he was
desperate to "get" a car. In addition, terriers have a high prey drive, in my opinion. After losing Jasper I was determined to prevent a further tragedy with my other cairn, Annie. I devised a belt with a leash hook on it which loops around the leash/flexi handle, so even if I drop the leash, Annie is still attached to me. It works pretty well, and has the advantage of enabling "no hands" at such times as are appropriate. Of course, a "flexi' is dangerous in itself if not used properly. 99% of my walks are in the woods or on little used back roads. All the more ironic, that Jasper encountered one of the 4-5 cars that travel our road.
I hope this story will help someone who may have a similar problem, and everyone who needs a reminder to get a grip on that leash.
