Roo Does Cape Cod!
Well, you probably saw this before -- me and Mom on the beach off Bay Road, in Cape Cod. My first "taste" of the ocean and i loved it!

OOPS! So excited I posted it twice -- sorry!
This is the sweet little cottage we stayed in -- just a few steps from the bay.. . .

The second day we went to Coast Guard Beach. Mom couldn't wait to shuck her sneakers and get her bare feet in the sand.
I didn't have to shuck anything -- I was ready!
Oh those beautiful waves!!!

Re: Roo Does Cape Cod!
All too soon it was time to go home -- and we saw this windmill as we were leaving the Cape -- it's actually part of a Christmas Tree Shop (and no, Mom didn't get to go in -- we were stuck in a huge backup going over the beach).
Well, maybe next time -- we are thinking of possibly going back in October!!!!

Re: Roo Does Cape Cod!
Actually it was pretty cool sand -- around 49 degrees that day with about 40-45mph wind -- but it was sunny and I was with Mom and Dad, the only other thing that would have made it perfect would have been to share it with you!

Re: Roo Does Cape Cod!
What great pictures. Sure looks like you had a great time even if it wasn't summer weather. Living in Maine, I know how cold the sand can be and your Mom was very brave to walk barefoot. The cottage looks very welcoming and comfortable and would be very nice if you guys go back again in the fall. Glad everyone had a good time and isn't it nice to be back home in your warm and comfy house?

Re: Roo Does Cape Cod!
Roo it looks like you and your family had a great time on the Cape! It brings back many memories. The Coast Guard Beach was Mishy's favorite place. She always loved the smell of the air on the Cape, swimming in the Bay and chasing seagulls. She also loved rolling in the sand after a swim. Cousin Sammie recommends next time escaping the leash and rolling in some dead crab. Eau du Dead Crab is her favorite scent.
I recognize that Christmas Tree Shop. It's no different from any of the others inside, it's just bigger. That bridge is ALWAYS backed up with traffic on a weekend. I remember just sitting in the car for ages and ages fighting with my siblings and wondering whether we would ever make it home. It's early for the summer season but I guess the unseasonable weather brought out the tourists early. Glad you had a great vacation!

Love the Cape. Tend to go off season or mid week due to the traffic "back ups".

Re: Roo Does Cape Cod!
Even off season, there are back-ups. We ran into some big traffic at Sagamore Bridge -- cannot imagine what it is like during the summer!
If we go back, it'll probably be in October or maybe even early November --- definitely off-season!

Yup -- wish it could have been longer but it was nice to get away, if only briefly. May go back in the fall -- I hear October is beautiful on the Cape.

Re: Roo Does Cape Cod!
Glad you had a great time on the Cape! The Christmas Tree Shops are GREAt - you can never go in without buying something.
They actually put one down here in Greensboro -- Mary I bet you go :-)
The fall is the perfect time to visit the cape - most places are still open and the weather can be mild.
We are beach dogs too

I have to laugh!
Although Roo seemed right at home on the ocean side, one evening when I walked him down the bay road to do his business, he noticed the waves rushing in to high tide and he growled at them!!! I THOUGHT THAT WAS PRETTY FUNNY!
I was a bit nervous about taking him -- would he behave, would he be happy??? . End result:: a little bit antsy on the way -wanted to be on my lap on the way and I had to change his mind about. that, for his safety/ He really appreciated the dog zones on the Mass Pike (special fenced dog areas!) and went readily -- almost as if he knew there were more miles to go -- and he wanted to go those extra miles! (Coming back, we left his crate open and he actually did sleep in it.
In the cottage, the first morning he had a "little" marking incident (pretty minor and we didn't chastise him for that since he really didn't know the rules, although we did -- but other than that he was perfect! When I took him for some walks around the neighborhood, I let him sniff and dally, but when I finally said "Do your business, he DID!
He has been very mellow since we got home (but not totally because you can't keep a good terrier down!) -- kind of sleepy and tired. Had he been younger, I would have been surprised, but he's going on 11 (this summer) so I think that's to be expected.
But I really did get a kick out of him growing at the incoming waves -- wish I had taken a video on that!!!
I would advise anyone taking their pup on vacation to a totally new environment -- there is no way, really, that you can prepare them for the new stuff -- but patience and understanding go a long way.
The first night, he did not want to sleep in the special place we made for him (NO WAY!), but as soon as I let him on the bed with us, he was fine.( I think we was a little bit scared of all the "new stuff" he had to contend with) I was a little cramped in the morning because he slept on my legs, but it was well worth it to know he was comfy and secure!
Make sure you take his regular food and water bowls -- they appreciate that familiarity.!( And, of course, his/her regular food,)
Be very understanding. I found out that, while walking him in unfamiliar territory, my talking to him seemed to help him adjust to the new place. After a while, I think he realized it was just the three of us and that we weren't dropping him off somehwere along the way.
Get them used to being in the crate. Although, we didn't use it much, I can still appreciate its uses, especially knowing he was safer in our vehicle and was less of a little pest!
Take water from home -- we took an empty 2-liter bottle so he had water from home and didn't have to deal with unfamiliar water.
Okay, that's all for tonight -- maybe more pics tomorrow.

Re: I have to laugh!
I always took bottled water with me when I traveled with Kelsey & Furby. Even my Dad kept bottled water in the fridge at his house for them even though we used his water from the tap.
Glad Roo did so well. Furby always marked one spot at Myrtle Beach, in Gert's son's cottage. I always cleaned it up and let Gert know he did it, soime dog must have done it before him.

Re: Roo Does Cape Cod!
So glad you had a wonderful time. We are seasoned travelers, the more you go the easier it gets. Buster has had an accident or two in a motel so Mom plans to make a couple belly bands for just such occassions. We went to the Redwoods last years and really enjoyed the beach, too. Mom found a quiet place we could be off leash. Lots of drift wood to pee on. We didn't pay much attention to the waves. To busy making our own splashes heehee. Loved the photos.
