Katie's visit at the Oncology Unit -long Vote for this post

Today Katie and I went to visit the oncology unit for the first time. These patients are terminal with cancer, but are finally getting to have a visit from a dog, other than the same doctors and nurses.
Katie did real good. She was able to lay on the bed next to the patient, and the patient was able to pet her or rub her belly.
But Katie and I experienced something horrible there. We were waiting for the nurse to show us where to go next, and one of the nurse's aid received an emergency phone call. Turns out her son was shot in the head. She dropped the phone, collapsed on the floor, and cryed about her son and how she didn't want to live. I am not sure about the whole circumstances, the why. But I just can't imagine hearing that news about my sons. That poor woman - we need to say a prayer for her. But Katie did real excellent. She and I stepped back from the scene, and just waited to see what they wanted us to do. I was willing to just forget the next visit, but they wanted us to visit. Katie sat next to me, and just watched, not fussing at all. She is something. A special little girl.
Sorry this is long - but the day was a little upsetting.

wow Linda.
I do hope all goes well with that nurse .
Katie did very well and we are very proud of her.
I know she helped those patients. Its hard to be a terminal patient and that is a small comfort to them.

The story was in the paper this morning. It was someone doing random shootings in a parking lot. Her son was had a bullit graze his head or shot in the chin. But, they all don't have life threatening wounds. This is good.
You all have a good Sunday

What a relief to read that the Nurses' son will recover!
Katie's visit had to be a very sweet treat for the patients. We are sure that they will be looking for her return.
Hope the next visit is less upsetting.

What a nasty end to such a wonderful day, Linda. Sorry it was so traumatic but it sounds like Katie (and yourself) did a wonderful service there.

Sounds like you and Katie had quite a day. I hope when my days on earth are numbered someone will bring a soft fuzzy creature to cuddle with me. I can't imagine how lonely they must be there. I'm glad things turned out ok for the nurse's son...
