Winston's Adventure Anniversary
I am not sure this is an adventure,.. it is sort of.. its also a rescue story. Mom didn't know where it would be best to post but I think of it as an adventure so here it is:
A little background first: Mom came to NJ in 2000, she had come to go back to school. It was at school that she met my "other" mommy they became friends. Mom traveled back and forth to California in 2000 and 2001 and in 2002 with my older sister Sam.
In 2003 my "other" mommy suggested getting a show dog to co-own.. I was just a pup then. My mom didn't know anyone in Westies in NJ then, but suggested looking for a breeder through the National club and the NNJ club. When I was found, she and my "other" mom agreed to co-own me..
Here I am as a pup:

Re: Winston's Adventure Anniversary
Things were good for a little while. Mom took me to classes and I even got to see my real brother in obedience classes. I was smart even as a pup, mom always says so...
Here I am graduating from Obedience at just 14 weeks:

Re: Winston's Adventure Anniversary
When I was 5 months it was getting closer and closer to the time I would be entering the show ring.. My "other" mom decided to take me to get groomed. IT TURNED OUT TO BE A NIGHTMARE...! I was attacked by a large doggie... mom called it a doberman on steroids. I still think it was a Rottie. I had bites in my neck and on both of my hind legs.. and on my belly. My other mommy decided to try and hide it and so did the groomer, they gave me a bath to wash all that blood off. As you can imagine it wasn't pleasant. That night when I got back to mom's house, my other mom put me on the ground to walk in the door. Mom came to pick me up to give me kisses and I growled at her. I didn't want to be mean, but I had had enough and didn't want her to touch me. Mom of course wasn't going to let me get away with that behaviour, but then again she didn't know yet why I had done that. When she turned me over in her arms, she saw that I had been attacked. My "other" mom said that she didn't know anything about the wounds! THE LIAR!
Anyway, mom made sure I was taken care of, the soap that was used to give me a bath, in combination with the bacteria from the bites gave me a nasty infection. I had to go the V-E-T.. UGh.
Worse than the wounds I had from the bite was the fear of humans and other dogs. Mom spent a long time helping me to get over that fear. (for the most part) I love the water, but hate shampoo! Even though it doesn't burn me.. I love people now.. I love other dogs, as long as they aren't big and look like a dobbie or rottie. Mom did get me in the ring too...
But I am jumping ahead. The adventure is just starting.
In April of 2004 my "other" mommy did something criminal. She stole me from my mommy and ran away. I suffered with that other mommy... one of her family members told my real mommy where I was and how I was being treated. I had to live outdoors a lot. I was on a vegetarian diet sort of, I was given a plate of vegetables every night. Sometimes it was a plate of string beans, sometimes califlour, sometimes carrots. I was stuck in a run with a bunch of hounds that were used for hunting because my other mom had a dog in the house that used to beat me up. Eventually all I woud do was sit in the corner and stare, I was afraid to move, even in the kennel run. My "other" mom hit me too.
When my mom found out where I was, it was July, she made sure that she was going to come get me. The family member helped her and got me signed over to my real mom permanently. I was in a sad state, even though it had only been 3 months.
This is me the day I got back to NJ:

Re: Winston's Adventure Anniversary
I loved your graduation photo then scrolled down to this picture which just broke my heart as I read the tale behind the picture. What an old bitch she turned out to be. I can't believe she stole him like that and broke his joyful little spirit...I'd have swung for the cow. Thank goodness you got him back and were able to turn him around. Thankyou for sharing his story, Loren. XXX.

Re: Winston's Adventure Anniversary
I was 15 pounds under weight the V-E-T said... I was so thin and my chest sunken in that you could put your fist up into my rib cage...
Mom started to feed me healthy food and although I had trouble keeping a lot of things down at the beginning, mom was very patient and I started to eat a little more each time and keep it down. It was nice to be fed every two hours like a pup.

Re: Winston's Adventure Anniversary
And gently and slowly mom began to groom away my sadness... I was thin for a long time, but mom and the V-E-T had faith that they would eventually make a BIG boy out of me

Mom also helped me remember that not everyone is like that "other" mom and we worked on those things that made me happy.. and brought back those fun times I had in my classes as a pup.
I even became a Therapy dog!

By Valentines Day I was in good shape, and could almost forget what happened...
I made it back into the show ring, which I absolutely love! Everone should always pay attention to Westies like that... We should be admired always!
I even got a girlfriend! Talk about a confidence boost!

Re: Winston's Adventure Anniversary
As this Anniversary comes this year I can finally say that I am ready to look to the future and live the life that I was intended to live...
And before I end my story I want to say.. to all you little furry friends... Love your Mommy and your Daddys.. give them kisses and extra hugs.. and on this one day.. be extra specially good... because its the least we can do to thanks those who treat us so well all year long... let it be a reminder that not all of our furry mates are so fortunate.
