Blue Ridge Vacation and PhotoShow Vote for this post

The Pack is back from our short 26th wedding anniversary trip to North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains where we stayed at the fabulous Dog House Resort! (www.dog-house-resort.com) It took about eight hours to get there from central Georgia due to many stops for walkies and tinkles (for both the two footed and four footed mammals in the car). Since I am a confirmed shopaholic, hubby was thrilled that all the outlet stores that we passed along the way were out of my reach due to having the furbabies in tow.
As we’d walk the pack at rest stops, people would always stare at the herd of white wonders. One man stopped me on the way into the potty as he muttered under his breath, “Nice dogs, lady.” (Well, duh…they’re Westies, I thought.) I smiled and thanked the gentleman as he puffed on his stogie. Another gentleman at a different rest area stop began to approach us and asked, “You breedin’?” Once again my sarcastic brain kicked in and thought, “Well no, not me personally as I’m a little old, but how much are you willing to pay for old human breeding stock?” I suppressed my sick sense of humor and gave him a quick smile and replied, “No, not us.” “OK”, he replied…”Nice dogs.” I chuckled to myself and thanked him as is the Southern tradition.
Turning off a main road in Jefferson, North Carolina we followed a meandering road that took us through hills and dales and along the New River. Leaving the tiny gravel road we climbed up, up, up, finally arriving at The Dog House Resort. We settled into our room and were stunned at how simply perfect everything was…even beyond our expectations. Picture 3 dog beds by our room’s fireplace with dog toys, treats, and bowls and immaculately clean. Our bed was huge and filled with lovely bedding and tons of comfy pillows. We had our own balcony that overlooked the valley below and had a private porch entrance that led to the dog run for play and exercise! The screen door to our balcony even squeaked which really is a prerequisite that makes a screen door perfect as far as I’m concerned. Our room was called The Lady and the Tramp Room. (I guess that makes my husband the tramp as it is surely not me. I’ve been called many things in my life but never a tramp.) The owners, Britta and Roger greeted our babies and showed them their office and gave them more treats! The lodge itself is a huge cabin just built a year ago with a library, exercise room, dog babysitting room, common living room area, and breakfast room. It consists of 4 guest rooms (all with fireplaces and satellite television) while the owners live in another beautiful lodge above the bed and breakfast with their furbabies, Rex and Rena.

The resort offers free pet-sitting so Hubby and I decided to leave the pets with Britta in the Amadeus Play Room while we went to dinner in nearby Jefferson. The owners suggested the restaurant and it was perfect. We sat in wing back chairs as we sipped chardonnay and ate red snapper and black and blue steak. The music in the background was romantic, Begin the Beguine…Moon River…shall I go on? We even got up during dinner and danced cheek to cheek by our table. (We could hear the wait staff go, “AHHHH” as we swooned in each other’s arms. Yes, even old married couples still swoon.)
Driving the road back to the resort, Hubby and I were thinking this is simply too good to be true! Well, when you start thinking that, you can count on that it really is too good to be true!!! As we pulled up to the resort, we noticed through the window that Sugar was sitting on Britta’s lap in the office as Britta is doing something on the computer. Now you must know that the office is one floor above the babysitting room. We rush up the stairs to the office and knock on the door. McTavish and Haggis are smiling and wagging their tails as we open the door. Sugar goes nuts and wiggles her way out of Britta’s lap and runs directly to me. For those of you who don’t know my pack, the boys are fine behaved English lads and Sugar is our sweet angel that we adopted as a rescue. We wouldn’t trade Sugar for anything and she has come a LONG way since we adopted her, but understandably, rescues can have issues and Sugar is no exception. (Don’t we all have issues though?) She is bonded to Hubby, but she is especially bonded to me. Back to the story, Sugar howled from the time we left the B&B and stirred up such a fuss that she got the lads arrooooing and whining with her!!! Britta had to take them all up to her office to calm down Sugar and the rest of the pack as there are other guests at the resort, too! Too bad the Dog Whisperer wasn’t staying at the resort at the time. We took the pack for a run and walkies to calm them down and “packed” it in for the night.

The next day Darrell had booked a round of golf at the nearby country club and I had booked a day at the Healing Waters Day Spa. Britta was to doggie sit again, but realizing Sugar has such separation anxiety issues in the new surroundings I decided to stay behind and be with the pack as hubby went off for 18 holes of his favorite sport. Meanwhile Britta called and cancelled my spa appointed and worked her magic and had the masseuse come to the resort and pamper me for a whole two hours!! Anita set up her portable table in my room and Sugar and the lads were there happily taking in the whole show. Afterwards, hubby and I took the pack up the mountain to the state park for a picnic and exercise. We cancelled our dinner reservations at a beautiful inn while Britta and her husband Roger went in our place. While there they had a lovely dinner and ordered our dinner for us and brought it back to the resort where we (the pack included) had a romantic dinner on the balcony overlooking the glorious Ashe County Valley.
Now we’re home and reflecting on our short trip, what a perfect place to vacation with your doggies. Not only are Roger and Britta the ultimate hosts, the resort really is perfect in everyway. I would go again tomorrow, if I could. Maybe this will whet some of your appetites to visit them as they have dog lovers that come as far away as New York. If you go, tell them Darrell and Peggy and their Westies sent ya! I hope you enjoy our short slide show of the trip!!!

Peggy, I loved reading your anniversary adventure. What a super place and the hosts are great...how very nice of them to take poor Sugar and the boys into their room then get your dinners too....the lake walk looked just gorgeous. What a smashing place to go.
Big congratulations.
